“I love you too,” he said before swooping down and covering her mouth with his.
He tasted like cinnamon, and she breathed him in as the heat of his arms wrapped around her. The pressure on her mouth intensified as Gabe slid his hands to her waist, pulling her closer.
“Well,” she heard Mrs. Bybee say from behind her, “that was quite a finale, wouldn’t you say?”
The audience responded with loud whistles and another round of applause.
She and Gabe laughed and ended the kiss. Piper was about to turn and wave to the audience, when Gabe withdrew a beautiful solitaire diamond from his pocket.
“This ring is anything but an ending, Piper,” he whispered as he slipped the ring onto her finger. “It’s a start to our family.” Holding her face, he lowered his mouth to hers and touched her lips softly. Then he threaded his fingers into her hair, deepening the kiss.
Piper was vaguely aware of the students vacating the risers. She melted into Gabe as the curtains lowered in front of them, signifying the end of the concert… but for her it was just the beginning of forever.
