“It doesn’t matter. We will track her down. I have unfinished business with her and her friends.”
“You may be a shifter, but even your nose can’t track someone through a city as dense as this one. So unless you have an idea of where she ran ...”
“Better.” Maribel raised her clenched fist. Janette flinched, but the shifter didn’t strike. Instead she unfolded her fingers to reveal a golden ring inset with fake green and white stones.
“That’s one of her enchanted pieces,” Janette breathed. She wasn’t sure whether to shy away from an object tainted by magic, or snatch it before the shifter could run off.
Maribel smiled and nodded.
“It’s no good on its own,” said Janette quickly. “We’d need someone who can do tracking magic. You claim you can’t. So unless you’ve got enough money to pay an enchanter, and know where we can find one ...”
The shifter’s grin widened, taking on a predatory gleam. “And if I do?”
Janette studied the ring, gleaming in the moonlight. Slowly she reached out and traced the metal ring with one finger.
She looked into Maribel’s not-quite-sane eyes and felt the first flicker of returning purpose. “All right. I’m in.”
