Lil had been cleared of all wrongdoing which I was glad about. Her jewelry had been found locked away in Lord Chasterly’s bedroom and returned to her. She’d written me a note of thanks which was elegant and stiff at the same time, but I forgave her. Lil was a prickly sort. She’d warm up to me.
Alex went off to Monaco to gamble, or so Toni informed me.
“To cheat at cards again?” I imagined him dressed in a tuxedo and making all the ladies swoon.
“No doubt,” she laughed. “I swear that man likes to live dangerously.”
Toni and I had become friends, which surprised me. We wrote each other frequently and I’d even visited her in London a couple of times where she’d dragged me around to plays and nightclubs.
The fate of Endmere and its staff was, unfortunately, still unresolved. Lord Chasterly was being forced to sell in order to cover legal expenses—although I had no doubt they’d find him guilty no matter how good a barrister he found. In the meantime, the staff was staying on to run the place. I hoped whoever bought it kept them on. Even cranky-pants Johnson.
It was an overcast morning when the phone shrilled. It hadn’t rung the entire time I’d been living there. Both Tippy and I stared at it with misgiving. At last I answered on the fifth ring.
“Hello?”
“Miss Martin, pack your bags,” Mr. Woodward ordered without preamble, voice muffled and staticky down the line. “I’ve another job for you.”
After a brief conversation, I hung up. Propping my chin in my hand, I eyeballed e dog. “You know, Tippy, a woman’s work is never done.”
Tippy gave me a haughty look and wandered into the kitchen in search of treats.
My stomach rumbled, letting me know that it, too, would like a treat. I stood up and followed him. “For a dog, you really do have the best ideas.”
