“I’m afraid not, but you can text,” he replied.
“Yeah, but it’ll take forever on that keypad.”
“I know it’s not one of those fancy smartphones you wanted, but it was the only way I could convince your mom to let you have a cell phone.”
Nina did not look happy.
“You can call Jamie on it,” he said.
“I don’t have his number.”
Callaway pulled out a piece of paper. “I spoke to him today, and I apologized for the way I acted. He seems like a nice kid. I think he likes you.”
“I don’t like him,” she said, but the smile on her face told Callaway that was not true.
“Sure, sure, but you can be friends, right?” he said.
After a pause, Nina took the phone from him. “Thanks, Daddy,” she said.
“You’re welcome, darling.”
She got off the swing and hugged him.
Callaway’s heart swelled with emotion. Nina was everything to him, and he could not bear her being cross with him.
They walked back to Patti’s house.
Patti was waiting for them at the door.
Waving her new phone, Nina raced inside the house.
“How did it go?” Patti asked.
“We’re friends again,” Callaway replied.
“Kids can be very forgiving.”
“What about adults?”
Her brow furrowed. “What do you mean?”
“I mean…” He paused to collect his thoughts. “I’ve been meaning to ask you for a while now. Would you like to go out with me?”
She was surprised. “You mean like a date?”
He shrugged. “Yeah, maybe for dinner or something.”
“I don’t know.”
“One date. That’s all I’m asking. I promise it’ll be better than your date with Dr. Hayward.”
Patti stared at Callaway and then smiled. “Alright, one date, but you better wine and dine me like royalty.”
He grinned and bowed. “As you wish, Your Highness.”
