It was an unknown, a question unanswered, and I felt as though that had become my life. From werewolves to fairy queens, I was always at a loss. And it wasn't like Olivia was going to be able to fill in much for me.
In the time I'd been in the fairy land, I realized that it was at least partially my fault. I needed to speak up and ask more questions. The pack was always happy to teach me, they just didn't seem to know where to begin. And, it wasn't as if I hadn't learned, but I was starting to fill in gaps; gaps I needed to fill to help save our world from massive exposure.
If that could still be done.
"There's nothing wrong with asking all of you to host me, is there?" I said, not asked, looking up at Iyadre.
The drake sighed and shoved his nose in my hunting bag. After a moment, he came out with a mouthful of berries. "You aren't like us. You spent too long indoors. Olivia has trouble adjusting. You won't make it out here."
"I'm so glad that I have our confidence," I said, weaponizing my smile at him.
Olivia got up and walked to him, wiping the berry juice from his snout as she nuzzled him. "Forget about her. You're here for me. What'd you find out about our little project?"
I didn't blink or fidget. I'd known there was something going on the moment that Nariti had tried to throw me out of the cave, which had happened a whole day after I'd begun serving my sentence. At first, I'd thought they simply didn't want to draw any ire from Queen Nerida, but that didn't seem likely. Every day, I saw the entire flight taking wing into areas that the queen had expressly forbidden me from entering. They were dark lands, always filled with shadows and hiding from the sun.
Maybe the flight had long-time friends over there and it was completely innocent. Somehow, I doubted it. Though I had absolutely no idea what was over there, my imagination was more than happy to produce horrific images and terrible monsters that dwelled in the dark. None of them scared me, exactly, but I didn't want to sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee with them, either.
Some of the fae on this side of the... world? Was this a different world? Some of those fae were downright evil. Carrie Ann was there under some sort of guest right protection, essentially making her immune to the weapons and magic of Queen Nerida's fae. Yet, I was certain that if I went to Queen Socorro with my dog, I'd be watching her get grilled over a spit within minutes.
I looked forward to a day when I no longer had to deal with the fae or any other shifter again. Friends were fine, and I was happy to have those at my back. But if I could have a quiet life, raise my kids, enjoy my pack, and work with the animals until I died old and grey? I was fine with that.
"Not here," Iyadre said. "There are ears that will hear."
He took Olivia by the hand, hooking his tooth through her fingers, and guided her out of my ear shot. I shook my head and went back to cooking the group of us dinner. The Nightflight would trust me, eventually, one way or the other.
Our future depended on it.
