Though if she was going to be coming around the office more...maybe it was time I had a chat with my dear friend, Ash. I loved the dude like a brother, but there are just certain lines you do not cross. His hands coming anywhere near my sister is hard line number one.
The town’s new mayor steps up to the podium at that time, the screech of the microphone causing everyone in attendance to wince. Once it subsides, she smiles brightly, welcoming everyone to the festivities.
“Good evening, everyone,” she begins, quickly launching into a speech about how grateful she is for the opportunity to lead our great city. After Mayor Mitchell had skipped town, they’d held an emergency election, and Mayor Burton had won by a landslide. She was a good woman, an honest person—in short, she was everything Mitchell had pretended to be and failed spectacularly at. And I was honored to be handing the keys to this beautiful new building over to this woman.
At my scheduled cue, I walk up the three steps to the stage, listening as the mayor commends me, Barrett, and Ash—as well as our crew—for doing such an amazing job. She even goes as far to say that next year, when the city has the budget to rebuild a new fire station, she’d be honored if BrookStone Partners would take the job. I’m on cloud nine, shaking the mayor’s hand, the smile on my face so big, I’m sure they can see it two towns over. I don’t even hear my name being called from the front of the stage until the mayor points it out.
I turn and look over my shoulder, Scarlett is leaning against the front of the stage, her face flushed and her eyes damp. “Benton. I need to talk to you.”
I furrow my brows. “I’m kind of in the middle of something Scar. Can’t it wait?”
She shakes her head vehemently. “No. I need to talk to you now.”
“Give me just a minute,” I say, turning my attention back to the mayor, irritation that she’s interrupting this important moment for me and my friends rushing through me.
“Benton, please,” she pleads, and I drop the mayor’s hand and storm across the stage to her.
“What, Scarlett? What is so damn important that it couldn’t wait five more minutes?”
Tears flood her eyes again, this time spilling down over onto her cheeks. She quickly buries her face in her hands, her voice muffled when she speaks.
“I’m ppppnt.”
I let out a huff. “Come on Scarlett, spit it out.”
She drops her hands, after wiping her cheeks, and looks me square in the eyes. With a deep breath, she exhales slowly and spits out the last two words I ever expected to hear.
“I’m pregnant.”
