that time wasn't quite so against him.

  The man moved from his hiding spot as a break in the flow of the traffic made an opportunity for the figure to dash across, and using the improvised little blade, scraped away a chunk of skin from the back of his right hand, not quite managing to remove the strip of dermis entirely, as it still dangled at the edge of the wound. He scurried away, slipping around and through the crowd nimbly. Finally, a safe distance away, he found a doorway to stop in, turned and watched joyously as the figure absentmindedly tore the fragment of skin away with his teeth, spitting it out when he realized the grotesqueness of what he'd done. The man brought the little silver leaf of his weapon to his unnaturally-wide lips, enjoyed the taste of his victim's flesh he found on it.

  The light changed, and the figure was swept across the street and out of his sight by the surging multitude, no doubt resigning the unnerving experience to be forgotten in the face of the urgency of his task.
