CHAPTER 3
“You’re scum, you know that Hamilton,” Agent Deacons shouted at the doctor. The rage that had subsided moments ago had returned. His face was flush as his mouth puckered and his nose wrinkled. He was breathing short, choppy breaths. “Kicking all those people out of their homes just so you could put a little money in your bank account. You’re disgusting”
“You will refer to me as Doctor, agent, or my confession ends here.” The smug, pained grin returned to the doctor’s face however briefly.
Deacons flung himself at the the doctor and before anyone had a chance to react his right hand connected squarely with its target. There was an audible snap as the doctor’s jaw was dislodged from its place. “Here, let me fix that for you,” the burly agent hollered as he struck the captive from the other side, knocking everything back into place.
“That’s enough. We don’t have anything yet, Deke.” Jennings forced himself between captive and partner. “We need to hear the rest of this. If we try to put him away for fraudulent evictions, he’ll walk out of here tonight.”
“I like your partner, Agent Deacons. He plays the role of ‘good cop’ so well. I’ll forgive your interruption this time, but I will remind you I do not appreciate being disrupted. One more such occurrence and I may end my tale there.”
“The floor is yours, Doctor,” Jennings allowed. “Please continue.”
