An Agent for Phoebe Page 15

  “Are you?” she asked.

He was quiet for long enough to make her nervous. And then a slow smile curved his lips. “I think I am.” His smile grew. “No, I know I am.”

Relief flooded through her. He was happy.

  And so was she.

Unexpected laughter bubbled up inside her. “I knew marrying you would pay off in the long run.”

He heaved an exaggerated sigh. “Such tender words from the mother of my children.”

Her heart leaped as the reality sank in. After having tried for so long to conceive with her first husband, her reaction to the doctor telling her that she was expecting had at first been disbelief.

“I’m going to have a baby,” she said, her voice filled with wonder. “I’m going to have a baby!”

Jonah’s eyebrow rose, a smile warming his eyes. “That’s generally what being pregnant means.”

Her gaze lowered to his chest as she realized the full truth of it. “It wasn’t my fault. All that time Norman blamed me for not getting pregnant, and it wasn’t my fault.”

His arms tightened around her and he kissed her forehead. “Of course it wasn’t your fault,” he whispered against her skin. “Any man stupid enough to leave you is obviously deficient in all areas.”

Raising her face, she pushed her fingers into his hair, pulled him to her, and kissed him with all the love in her heart.

  “I love you so much.”

He smiled. “I love you more.”

  “You do not.”

“I do. I also dote on you more and miss you more when you’re not around and admire you more and think you’re more beautiful and…”

She laughed as he listed all the ways he adored her more than she adored him, none of which were true since no one could possibly love anyone more than she loved Jonah.

She was going to be a mother, and she didn’t at all regret that it hadn’t happened sooner.

Because all her years of heartache with the wrong man had led her to the one who was most definitely, wonderfully right.

The history of Black Hawk, Colorado, is a fascinating one. It was founded in 1859 during the Pikes Peak gold rush, as were many other places including Denver and Boulder. Black Hawk was, as Jonah mentioned, known as the City of Mills thanks to the large number of stamp mills and smelters in the vicinity. At its height, it was home to more than 1500 people. I have taken a small liberty in having Jonah and Phoebe travel up to the town on the railroad. The first scheduled run to Black Hawk on the Colorado Central line was actually three months later, on December 11th, 1872, but I hope you can forgive me giving history a tiny nudge!

The Pinkerton Matchmaker series continues with An Agent for Evangeline by Patricia PacJac Carroll, and I will be back soon with book eight of my Escape to the West series, Courting Will.
