My journey home that night had led me past the old foundry. It was built in 1912 and had closed down a long time ago. 7 people had died there in a freak accident; this is when it had been closed leaving hundreds of workers unemployed. The foundry never opened again. Every few years someone talked about purchasing the place to use the land for apartment blocks. No less than 3 ‘For Sale’ signs were on the fence. The foundry still sat in disrepair; crumbling and more sinister looking as the sky became darker. Surprisingly the fence that surrounded the grounds was always kept in good condition; whoever owned the property obviously wanted to keep intruders out.
As I was walking past, I noticed another cool angle from which I could photograph the old foundry; I’d taken hundreds over the years. I took out my mobile phone and activated the camera. I began to crouch and take pictures when I felt a few sprinkles of what I guessed was the beginning of the downpour that had been predicted. I still had four blocks to walk before reaching home, so I knew I had better start getting a move on. The rain was getting heavier as I walked along.
For some reason I pulled my jacket collar up high around my neck. It was wishful thinking that it would help keep me dry. All I could hear was the rain coming down and it wasn’t long before my feet were splashing in unavoidable puddles as I walked.
Then I heard something unexpected; an almighty bang from inside the foundry. It made me jump, turning my blood cold. The bang had a metallic sound to it that even from this distance from the building; it made my ears ring. I walked over to the fence. I could hear the rain hitting the ground which had now turned to mud between me and the foundry.
I slowly walked along the fence when I noticed a flicker of light; something inside behind the grimy window was moving; then I heard another loud ‘bang’. This had my interest and the downpour of rain didn’t seem to worry me anymore. I followed the fence around the corner before noticing the tall gate at the end was ajar. I looked up; the sky became darker. It was getting late in the day and night would be here soon.
I entered the gate; my curiosity was leading me forward. There was no rush to get home; an empty house and a T.V. dinner didn’t seem too inviting at the moment.
I closed the gate as best I could after entering the grounds and slowly walked to the entrance. The light flickered again from behind the window. A dark shadow passed in front of the light as I walked towards the huge building with determination. I still had to be careful not to slip and fall as the mud was getting sloppier and deeper.
I came to a steel door that had seen better days with all the dents and rust that covered it. I tried to open the door even though I suspected it would be locked. It’s then I heard another bang that was even louder than the first two. This should have been enough to convince me to hightail it out of there. Instead I moved around to the side of the brick building.
I noticed a set of metal stairs that zig zagged up the side; I began to climb those steps. On the first metal platform was another metal door. This was also locked. I kept climbing the stairs until I got to the next metal platform. The door on this floor was unlocked but the hinges on this door was extremely rusty. I used all my strength to keep pulling at the door.
The door slowly opened a little bit more with each pull. The steel door made a loud scraping sound against the metal platform. Once I had the door open enough to allow me to enter; I squeezed myself inside the doorway and was surprised to see that halfway down the brick hallway an old light was turned on. I felt surprised that the electricity hadn’t been disconnected all those years ago. It gave off a sinister yellow glow over everything it reached.
I cautiously walked down the hallway. The industrial hum from machines somewhere in the building were the only sound I could hear. I walked around the corner and sidestepped a cut in half rusting 44 gallon drum; it had dried up gunk encrusted to the bottom.
I kept walking and then with no warning, another metallic bang erupted. The shockwave of the bang shook the hallway, making me stumble and I put my hand on the wall to keep myself from falling. The ringing in my ears had returned so now I could hear the ringing and the humming of machines. I stopped and waited. Listening for any other noise while I gathered some courage and continued on.
The end of the hallway revealed another door, but this door looked worse for wear. The door had been busted off its hinges and was leaning up against the wall in the hallway. I noticed huge dents and what looked like parts of the metal door had been shredded. My pulse started to race.
I began to sweat; my shirt getting wet from the inside this time. I walked into the next room and saw that it was some sort of monitoring room. The rooms’ walls were lined with old gauges; big thick pipes running up and down and side to side were also on the walls.
Most of the pipes were painted a dark, old train green colour. The gauges looked like they had not been used in a very long time. Cobwebs were gathering in every corner and coated the gauges. I kept walking and went through the next doorway.
The sound of humming machines grew louder. I walked into a large room and found myself stood at a railing, there I looked out over a large brick and metal room. The humming was very loud and coming from a large gun metal grey machine which filled the room. It looked like something from a 60’s science fiction movie.
The motors inside this huge machine shook the outer casings. I turned away from the machine and noticed a bright flickering light coming from down in the lower section of the building. Suddenly the light became blinding and another violent metallic bang came from below. The shockwave was big enough to throw me back against the humming machine. I hit the back of my head against the machines’ metal casing. I slide down the side and sat on the cold filthy concrete floor. My vision was seeing sparkles and everything was blurry.
I attempted to get up but kept losing my balance and falling over. My vision slowly cleared and I crawled on my belly to the edge of the upper floor. My back hurt as I pulled myself up using the railing. I peered over and saw what looked like some sort of scene out of a horror film.
Three hooded figures had three women chained down; each to a large wooden bench. Filling the rest of the room were cages big enough to house elephants, but instead they had other women locked inside them. Some were awake, crying and had a look of fear in their eyes and some looked like they were asleep or passed out.
Occasionally one of the women would beg for the hooded figures to let them go. One of the mysterious figures had a stone bowl in their hand and a small brush in the other. The figure painted red markings onto the woman who yelled and screamed. The three hooded figures chanted something I couldn’t quite make out. I looked around for a way to get down to the lower level.
The flickering of bright white light began again. I looked at where it was coming from; I felt confused. The bright light was coming out of nowhere, about ten feet above the woman with the red markings on her. I must have hit my head harder than I thought; then something else happened. The air; the space above the woman began to warp, like everything near the woman was made of jelly. The white light flickered brighter and faster. I grabbed the metal railing tightly and braced myself for the bang that I was now somewhat getting used to.
The warped air looked like it opened u
p and a sort of fire beam shot down with a deafening bang; this is the only way I can describe what I saw. The bright lights died off and the air stopped warping. The woman with red markings on her was gone.
My nose was hit with a strong burnt smell. I could only imagine the woman was murdered with some sort of weapon. I felt sick in my stomach. The hooded figure began painting similar markings on the next woman.
I heard a scuff sound and as I turned to see what it was I was hit with something. I lost balance and it seemed the concrete came up to hit me in the face. I blacked out.
My head pounded as I came to; my vision yet again was blurry. Suddenly the massive bang erupted again, which woke me from my drowsiness. I look to my left and see the two wooden benches next to me empty. I tried to move my arms and legs but I was chained down.
I begin to panic; screaming and yelling always hoping someone outside would hear me. My jacket and shirt had been removed revealing my bare chest; I also had red markings painted on me. I knew what would happen next.
I looked around; the three hooded figures were chanting as they stared at me. There were still women in cages. I look back at the hooded figure closest to me. His face seemed to have a piggish look about it
