I would get nothing more from him over this phone line. No point in asking.
Also, no point in refusing.
“When?” I heard a slight quaver in my voice.
“As soon as. Travel arrangements to follow.
Welcome back.”
Catrine had rushed to sit on top of my booted feet as soon as she heard the ring of the strange phone. She looked intently at me as I stowed the phone in my pocket and sighed deeply.
“I guess I am needed somewhere, Catrine.”
I began to turn around to go back indoors, but she stayed on my feet and her weight was already sufficient to stop me from moving. Her eyes grew larger and assumed the darker gold colour.
I did not need to wonder why.
“Don’t worry, Catrine. From now on I go nowhere without you. Nowhere!
Let’s go inside. We have preparations to begin and farewells to make.”
She accepted this and happily followed me indoors out of the wind.
I had no idea how the thing could be accomplished, or how Simon’s crew would receive her.
I just knew in my bones that Catrine and I belonged together no matter where I was sent.
Our time in Cornwall was over.
I was off on another mission, but this time I would not be going alone.
