Just before nine Wall, followed by the rest of the guys, came through the entrance doors to the emergency room while I paced waiting for someone to take me to see my woman. I stopped, wanting to give the guys the rundown of what the doctor had explained. I was struck tongue tied when I noticed the older woman from earlier walking towards me. I walked around the group of brothers that had surrounded me when I saw the nurse scanning the room. No doubt she was looking for me in the sea of new faces. “Ma’am,” I said grabbing her attention.
“There you are handsome. Dr. Alto sent me to collect you and take you to your pretty lady. Is this all our family, baby,” the older nurse asked?
“Yes ma’am. Her brother, sister and mother are here along with all her cousins. They won’t leave even if you asked them too so if you would be so kind to lead the way we would appreciate it,” I answered. Something told me that she would be trying to deter the amount of people going to the waiting room to get their chance to lay eyes on Bree. I know none of us will relax until we are able to see with our own eyes that Bree is doing ok.
“I have a large family myself, son. You all get your stuff together and follow me. We’ll have to take both elevators to get to her floor, but the waiting room is right to the side for the elevator bank, so it shouldn’t be too hard for you all to meet up. She’s on the third floor, room 3213. Now let’s get moving so I can get ya’ll where ya need to be.” Wall and I both walked beside the older woman with the rest of our family hot on our heels. When we reached the elevator Queenie, Carrin and Zeus took the first trip up with me, Wall and the older nurse.
When the elevator doors opened the waiting-room was right in front of us. It was empty, and the lights had been turned down for the night. The nurse was talking as we stepped off the elevator. “The doc only wants two at a time. I’ll round up some blankets and pillows from the linen closet after I take the first two back as I’m sure none of you all are planning on going anywhere for a while,” she stated without turning around.
“Fucking-A-Right, we won’t be going anywhere until my sister tells us to get the hell out of here. Mom, go ahead back with Tank. When you two come out I’ll bring Carrin in with me,” Wall growled sounding like he was on the verge of losing his shit. For his sake I hope he keeps it in check. If he gets us kicked out of this hospital over his fucking temper he’ll wear a hell of an ass whippin’.
I took Queenie’s hand in mine and followed the nurse down the hall through the double doors that were locked. With a swipe of the badge hanging from the lanyard around the nurses neck the doors swung open. We follow the nurse past the nurse’s station to the very end of the hall. The door to the right was wide open but the curtains where pulled closed giving of a bit of privacy. The beeping sound of the machines echoed around us and Queenie and myself moved towards the bed in the center of the room.
The nervous knots in my stomach faded once I laid eyes on Bree sleeping peacefully in the hospital bed that seemed to swallow her whole. My angel’s face was swollen around her right eye and turning various shades of purple. Queenie released my hand to rush to Bree’s side. I said nothing while Queenie looked my girl. She gently brushed the hair away from Breeanna’s face to place a soft kiss on her forehead before bending to talk softly into her ear. “You’re good now, baby girl. You rest up and get yourself better. We’ve still got a lot left to do to get your vision together. I’ll be here with you every step of the way, Bree. Like it or not, momma will be there to push you through it. I don’t want to leave you baby, but your brother and sister are going crazy waiting to see you for themselves. I’ll be right down the hall babe. I’m not leaving the hospital until your ready to walk out with us.”
Queenie steps back to look at me with tears in her eyes. “I’m going to head back to the waiting room so Carrin and Jacoby can come back. Why don’t you pull up the chair? I know you’re not planning on going anywhere until she wakes up. Try to get some rest, Bud.”
Queenie knew us all to well. I had no intention of going anywhere. As long as I’m quiet there shouldn’t be a problem. I will not have Bree wake up in a sterile hospital room without me holding her hand. I wait until Queenie closes the door behind her before I pull up the chair next to the bed to settle in for the night. With the chair flipped so that my back is towards the wall I know can prop my legs up on the side table next to her bed. This way I’m facing her holding her hand, so I can be the first things she sees when those whiskey colored eyes open.
I zone everyone out as they come and go checking on Bree. Knowing that I wouldn’t leave my girls side, Axle waits until everyone else has made their rounds before coming in last. At first, I figured he was just coming in to put eyes on Bree, but my president seems to take a page out of my book and pulls the chair up along the other side of my sleeping angel’s bed. I find the silence unnerving and wonder to myself why he is sitting visual with me. “Prez, I’m here for the night. I won’t have my woman waking up in some strange room after being fucking kidnapped by herself.”
“Don’t blame ya, brother. I can’t fathom what you’re heads at with this shit. It did my head in just seeing the aftermath of what those fuckers did to Avery and Madison when they were jumped outside the tour us a few months back. I still don’t like my woman being out of my sight. It’s gonna take a long ass time before I’ll get comfortable with it. Even though it seems that the end to all this bullshit is right around the corner the woman of this club will have eyes on them at all times until they get an ounce of leeway,” Axle says quietly.
“How’d things go after we left? I know of few of those fucking pigs were being complete dicks. Hell, I didn’t think they were ever going to let me leave with Breezy. I’m tellin’ ya, if I didn’t make it into the back of that ambulance with her our boy Tony would had even more of a fucking mess to clean up.”
“No doubt, brother. Just glad it didn’t come to that. Shit was a bunch of he said she said bullshit until the boys Tony knew got there. Even then it didn’t fully calm down til Tony himself showed up. Me and the boys could have left once he got there, but Wall wasn’t having it. Wall’s big ass was determined to wait until Carmen and Charlie were loaded in the squad car. We followed them all the way back to the station and waited until we saw everyone on of those fuckers escorted in the doors of the station. Tony went inside and is still there dealing with bullshit. He told me he would be in touch as soon as he was done down at the police station. Tony had all the shit we duck up with him to make sure none of those asshole’s get bail of any kind,” Axle explains.
I sat quietly running Tony’s plan through my mind. We were supposed to work alongside with his contacts at the state police barracks. A few that he knew would make sure these fucking animals were locked up for the hell they’ve been raining down on my family for almost two years now and the two he knew were on the Vovaleski’s payroll. Tony had already filled them in with the evidence he was building against them. Making the motive known that is was to get to Bree’s inheritance before the Vovaleski’s were able to cash in on Derek’s deal with them. For now, Derek will seem like an innocent by-standard in the Vovaleski’s eyes leaving Charlie and her accomplices to take the fall. As long as Derek follows through with the purchasing of Bree’s shares of the company he’ll be kept off the Vovaleski’s radar. If he doesn’t then we’ll be tracking Derek’s ass down to deliver to over to the feds for his shady dealings. Bree will still end up with her shares, as well as Derek’s. From there she’ll turn over the shares that were promised to the Vovaleski’s and selling off the rest to the highest bidder. We’re hoping it doesn’t come to that as we don’t want to piss the fucking mob off.
“So, I take it the plan is going like we hoped. Tony reach out to Derek and his lawyer to reschedule the sale of the stocks?”
“Yeah, Tony was on it as soon as we told him Bree had been taken. I’m not sure when or how he’ll get it set up to get it taken care of before Derek has to pay the pauper, though,” Axle says on a serious note.
> He and I both know things will be a whole lot smoother if the sale is finalized by Bree’s birthday. Which is in two days and with Bree being kept sedated I’m not sure how shit is going to pan out. “How long you think it’ll take for those dirty bastards on the take to reach out to the Vovaleski’s with the story Tony was spinning. I mean it’s not far from the truth. Charlie knew what her husband had promised the fucking mob and yet she still decided to go after Bree. You think that will give us a couple days before they find Derek to collect?”
Axle seems to mull it over for a few minutes before he answers me, “I’m not sure, brother. Our dealings with them have been slim to none, so haven’t a clue how they will react to this shit. Just means we’ve got to be vigilant. Can’t let our fucking guard down just yet, Tank.”
That was the end of our conversation for the night. At some point I allowed myself to fall asleep in the most uncomfortable fucking chair I’ve ever had my ass in. I woke to a male voice in the room. Not wanting to disturb the one-sided conversation between my angel and her brother I kept my eyes closed in hopes of faking sleep. The kink in my neck and empty stomach was more than enough reason to avoid all things Wall this morning.
Wall
I tried to keep shit locked down tight. The easiest way to do that was to just keep my damn mouth shut. The woman of the club rallied around each other keeping themselves occupied with talks of projects they were planning with Bree and the upcoming wedding. Every time the mention of Breezy came up I would take a walk to take a few breathes to calm my nerves. I knew in my soul my sister would be fine, but my head just couldn’t wrap itself around it. Honestly, between my sisters and Madison I don’t know which one will send me to an early grave. Hell, every single woman that belongs to this club will be the reason I’m bald or fucking gray headed before I’m thirty.
I’m walking back towards the waiting room when I see Axle walking through the swinging doors that lead back to the wing Bree is on. I say nothing as I walk up to join the rest of the crew as Axle addresses us all. “Ok, ladies, I’ve got to steal the grunts for a few. We’ve got a few things to address before we settle in for the night.” Axle bend to give Avery a quick kiss before turning to walk out in the hallway with the rest of us following closely behind him.
Axle waits until all of the brothers are out of the waiting room and away from the nosey ass woman before he starts to talk. “Bree is still snoozing, and Tank has finally crashed too. I don’t want to come of like a dick forcing you all to leave so I’ll leave it up to you to come up with a schedule of sorts. The women are welcome to stay however I need a you all to split up. I’ll leave it up to you to rotate between house and the clubhouse until Bree wakes up. This shit is almost over and those assholes are locked up now but we still don’t know the outcome of the Vovaleski’s involvement yet. If Bree isn’t awake and of sound mind in time to finish the sale of the company shares shit can get ugly real fucking fast.”
“Yeah, that unknown shit isn’t sitting all warm and fucking fuzzy with me, Ax. You thinking we’re gonna be hearing from them? You hear anything from Tony yet,” Zeus chimes in before anyone else can say a word.
“Ain’t got a clue but I’m not gonna be caught with my pants down either. The three of us here will be enough it’s not like the assholes will be able to bring the crew through the entrance doors without causing a scene. Home is another story all together. You all need to split up between the house and the clubhouse. Go home a get some sleep. Once I know more I’ll be I touch.”
Throttle addresses Axle getting the boys moving without any further discussion. “I’ll get the boys split up and ready to ride, Prez. Let’em go check in with their momma’s and women. You two keep you heads about ya. Let me know if you see anything out the ordinary. If it comes to it, I’ll start making some calls to get a few extra hands pulled from the Rowensville chapter.”
It took about fifteen minutes before all the final goodbyes were made. I waited until I saw the elevator door close encasing the rest of my brothers leaving only me and Axle standing in the hallway. Turning to open the door to the waiting room Axle’s hand on my wrist stops me. “Brother, you ain’t fooling no one. Your ass is wound tighter than a damn clock spring. Take a walk outside and catch a smoke. Clear your head a bit. Bree’s still gonna be asleep when you get back here. I’m going in here to find somewhere for my woman to get comfortable for the night. I’ll catch ya when you come back up.”
I took my hand from the door knob walked to the elevator without saying a word. Ax was right, I needed to get my head on straight but it’s not going to happen just walking outside to catch a smoke. Regardless I haven’t had my nicotine fix since before we left that damn condo Bree was held at. When the elevator doors opened at the ground floor I was met with a familiar face. “How’s your sister? I was just on my way up to talk to everyone,” Tony says standing in front of the elevator.
“I’m headed out to pollute my lungs for a few minutes. Axle is still upstairs with the women in the waiting room and Tank is with Bree in her room,” I stated moving towards the entrance doors of the hospital. I was downstairs now so Tony can either follow me outside or I’d catch up with him when I got back upstairs. Either way I was going to have a damn cigarette or two before I go up to sit with my sister.
Looks like Tony feels like joining me for a cigarette. He kept quiet until I removed one a lit it up before offering the pack to him. Last I talked to him, he had finally quit but it seems that he forgot about that shit. Maybe it was just the stress of the day or this fucked up situation we’ve landed ourselves in that had him accepting my offer. I watch the man I’ve known my whole life take a deep drag of the Marlboro before I ask the question burning in the back of my mind. “You stayed and made sure those motherfuckers didn’t get bail, right?”
“Yeah, man. I turned everything I had one Charlie and Carmen. Even had copies of the fire that was set at the bike and tattoo shop. The were already arranging transport for Charlie, Jewels and Yasmin. The women’s jail is only twenty minutes away in Columbia. Carmen and his helper will be moved in the morning. They’re both headed up to Fairfield first thing in the morning. That guy Drew, the one that was helping Carmen, had a rap sheet with a list of drug charges a mile long and a few outstanding warrants for home invasion. Typical fucking junkie, man. I’m sure Carmen will find a way to take him out before this shit goes to trial unless he’s put in protective custody. That fucker was singing like a canary to whoever wanted to listen. The same public defender has been appointed to all five of them, of course. Their fucked, man.”
“That’s good shit, man! You know if it’s gonna make it back to the Vovaleski’s? You think those two fucks on the take will reach out sooner rather than later,” I ask him. I’d like to have all this shit wrapped up by the time I bring my sister home.
“I’m pretty sure they’ve reached out already. Detective Bale was on his phone an awful lot in the short time I was there. Now we just gotta wait for Bree to wake up so I can get things rescheduled to finalize her inheritance. I called over to the grandmother’s lawyer and Derek’s as soon as I heard Bree had been taken to let them know we would need to reschedule everything do to Breeanna being abducted from her own driveway. I shot them an email while I was at the station letting her know that she had been found and was in the hospital. Derek’s lawyer had the nerve to ask per his clients request to take care of the sale by bringing in all parties involved to the hospital. I wanted to check in with Axle and Bree before I gave him an answer. Looks like Derek is stressing getting things handled before his deadline,” Tony said with a smirk.
“Tough titty! I don’t really give a fuck about his deadline. As long as this shit doesn’t fall back on my sister the Vovaleski’s can have his head on a silver platter. The not knowing how its gonna affect Bree is the only reason I’m even entertaining the idea of the deadline. Derek and his fucking lawyer better get on their knees and beg for fucking forgiveness because I won’t allow either one of those
fuckers in this hospital bugging the shit out of Bree,” I snapped feeling like I was ready to hulk out. Fuck Derek Loftland and his prissy ass lawyer. My only concern right now was making sure Bree is ok. When she’s ready to deal with shit I’ll be there with the rest of the family and not a minute before.
Tony could still read me just as good as anyone else in the club. He didn’t say another word to me letting he silence grow while I pulled deep drags from the cig I held between my fingers. With our cigarettes finished Tony and I took the elevator back up to the third floor. I left Tony by the door to the waiting room and headed straight back to Bree’s room. Time to pull up a chair and get comfortable.
I’m not an emotional being choosing to keep things locked tight. Hell, even when Pops died there was only one person who saw me break down and Madison will take that shit to her grave. Now though, walking into that damn hospital room seeing my baby sister hooked up to IV’s and monitors it felt like someone was running a dagger through my heart. The right side of Breezy face was swollen and bruised along with a busted lip. I could see what looked like finger print bruises on up and down both of her arms. I failed her, plain and simple. This was twice my sister feel victim to those assholes without me there to protect her.
If I let it, guilt would eat me alive. A few months ago, I would let myself wallow in it however I knew that I could let myself. I know I’m as vicious as a damn bear when I let myself get that way. According to Madison it was one of the main things that would be my downfall among other things. Things that I plan to fix while Madison is taking her year to finish school in some other state. I wasn’t lying when I told her leaving to finish school was the best thing for her. I kept the fact that it was what would be best for both of us to myself though. She’d get her time away to get her own head right while I stated in the background working on shit that I know has caused issues between us for years. Even though needs to happen, this shits still gonna suck big hairy balls. We both need to grow up a little before I lock her ass down for eternity. I’m might be pushing her to chase her dreams on her own for the time being but come graduation day I’ll be there ready and waiting to take what’s mine. Then we’ll be chasing that shit together.
