Awakening Magic Page 8

  After sharing so much about yourselves with each other, you’ve become friends.

  On an especially hot day, after finishing your ward work, you and Zera—and the rest of your squad, who stopped by to help—sit under the shade of a tree while she explains the name of her hometown.

  “It’s La ria na ciuda—the city on the river. In Central, we’re just plain old River City. Central—a thousand synonyms for everything and they’re terrible at naming things.” She scoffs, then continues, smiling. “La ria. That’s what the locals call it. And as my friends, you are honorary locals, at least for tonight. Don’t go claiming you’re from around there when you’re not with me, though! But tonight is going to be special.”

  “What’s tonight?” asks Abby.

  “I’m throwing a party! The best thing to do on days like this is wait till the sun goes down, then dance until your feet say ‘No more,’ you know? And I’m even getting one of my favorite hometown bands to come play for everyone.” As the result of a whip-round on her dorm hallway and a super-sweet letter written to the River City cultural committee, a musical group that’s a huge hit in half the galaxy is making its Magi Town debut tonight.

  Of course, there’s a very important question on your mind: what to wear?

  (1/4) A long dress

  (2/4) A short, poofy dress

  * * *

  (3/4) A short, tight dress

  * * *

  (4/4) A dress? Nah. You're going to wear pants!

  Your skirt flares out when you twirl! You feel super-cute and ultra-adorable.

  And you have an amazing time at the party. RiCi’s music is wild and fun and unexpected, and they keep bringing out instruments you’ve never seen before.

  When the band plays a goodbye song and leaves, an older girl takes over as DJ. No RiCi? No problem. The party migrates around campus like a living organism, following the whims of its components—snacks in the kitchen! Silly parlor games in the library!

  You nap briefly, but you’re soon awake when a group of girls from your hall gather in the common room of your suite, laughing and chatting and playing card games. With so much fun, what’s the point of sleeping?

  (And, thanks to your magical stamina, you’re not even the slightest bit tired!)

  After the band leaves, a classical group made up of students from various halls plays a few songs—and then they start taking suggestions. You eat miniature quiches and drink fruit juices from tiny crystal glasses and dance by starshine.

  When the music ends, the party migrates to the school tearoom, where there’s coffee and tea for everyone—and then to the library, where you discuss a favorite novel. The remnants of the group end up in your hall, having a very animated intellectual discussion about ancient literature; once or twice, people doze off during the conversation, but your magical stamina keeps you going.

  Everyone gathers outside to watch the sunrise; when the beautiful sun tinges the dawn sky with sweet pastel colors, you start feeling a tiny bit sleepy. Somehow, you make it back to your bed, and you fall asleep smiling.

  A bit before sunrise, however, you decide that it would probably be a good idea to get some rest. You’re not sure how exactly you make it to your bed; nevertheless, you manage.

  You feel sexy and bold and unstoppable. People keep complimenting you on how great you look, and you accept their kind words gracefully.

  And you have an amazing time at the party. RiCi’s music is wild and fun and unexpected, and they keep bringing out instruments you’ve never seen before.

  Zera whirls across the dance floor, glowing as brightly as a firefly in her green-and-yellow beaded gown. She’s the perfect hostess, and you’re so happy for and proud of her.

  You sip little cold drinks as sweet as rock candy from beakers that look like glow sticks, and you eat spicy little balls of fried chickpeas and suck deep-sauteed spinach and sea greens from the end of your fork. At midnight, the sprinklers come on.

  One sweaty, red-faced girl in a bell-ornamented flapper dress kicks off her shoes and makes a mad dash for the cooling spray that waters the grass.

  The rest of you—giddy, high on the music—soon follow.

  You fall into bed much, much later with a smile on your face.

  And then the party gets wild.

  Sledding down the staircase on your mattresses (it goes awry, but that’s why you had the foresight to put a large pile of mattresses at the bottom of the staircase. )

  A huge pillow fight.

  Making ice cream sundaes in the kitchen, shushing each other (because ohmigosh you guys, people are sleeping!) and giggling even louder at your own attempts to be quiet.

  At one point you’re all just laying in a huge cuddle pile, watching old Disney movies.

  Somehow, you make it back to your bed, and you fall asleep smiling.
