Cassie Tam is hired by Lori Redwood to investigate the death of Eddie Redwood, uncovering a clash between Gary Locke and Dean Hollister. This results in Dean pushing forward quicker with certain plans. After the case, Gary Locke is imprisoned, and Cassie and Lori begin dating.
Cassie is hired by a Tech Shift performer named Kitsune, and is tasked with finding their missing dog. During the case, Cassie is drawn into a conflict between Allen Fuerza and his accountant, Malcolm Castleford. She meets Ethan Cobalt for the first time, and learns that Fuerza is actually named Casille di Franco and is also all of the Four Kings of Utah. Malcolm Castleford is imprisoned.
LVs turn up un New Hopeland, and attack Cassie, amongst others. Forced to work with the PD and act as bait to draw them out, Cassie learns a little more about the King’s Guard. She discovers the LVs are led by Angel Tanner, and she is aware of Casille. During the case, Cassie also finds out there are three hybrid programming Familiars, Bert, a human-appearing woman Angela Faraday who works for Jonah Burrell, and a third, unnamed unit. Though Angel escapes, her associate Dr Sanderson is imprisoned.
Devin Carmichael admits to Lori Redwood that he has helped pull some strings in Cassie’s favour before now.
Cassie is hired by Dr Faraday when she is stalked. During the case, Cassie learns that Jonah Burrell’s home street, Lambert Drive, was rumoured to have been intended to have more houses. Once she uncovers Angel Tanner as the stalker, she also learns she was the first hybrid programmed Familiar unit, and Angela Faraday was a contracted creation. Angel kills Frank Tyson, an associate of Gary Locke, and ensures that Dr Sanderson kills Malcolm Castleford in prison. She gives Cassie enough of a hint that something is wrong in New Hopeland to entice her into considering a partnership. At Lori’s behest, Cassie reaches out to her mother to mend bridges.
Cassie sides with Angel Tanner in order to find out what is happening in New Hopeland. Cassie soon learns that Rebecca Hanson is in the King’s Guard, and she starts to unravel the origins of the city and Tech Shifter gear. Cassie reluctantly helps bust Gary Locke out of prison, but after he discovers that Angel is an AI, Angel executes him.
Cassie attempts to help the King’s Guard take control of the situation, but Joe Farrah is caught up in a gunfight and is killed by Angel Tanner, leaving Cassie is a difficult position. Charlotte Goldman then shows signs of siding with Angel, causing Cassie to make a choice as to how to proceed. During a raid on the secret unit under Jonah Burrell’s house, Cassie turns on Angel, and Casille di Franco is able to kill Angel. Cassie is knocked unconscious.
When she awakes, Cassie speaks with Hanson and Devin and is able to fill in some blanks. After negotiating with Dean, Jonah, and Casille, she joins the King’s Guard, replacing Joe Farrah as their eyes and ears on the streets. She then takes a holiday, confessing her love to Lori and taking her to meet her mother.
