“No,” I said it so fast it surprised me. “No. He’s…no. And he’s not going with me either.”
Edita chuckled. “You sure aren’t convincing. And by the look of his face in that video, he’s dating you, whether you know it or not.”
What in the hell was that supposed to mean? The look on his face in a dim, grainy video? “You know full well how I feel about that.”
“He’s a catch, Elizabeth. And he’s a fucking Callaway. I know you’re living in Calhoun Beach and all, but he lives in Germany now. How the hell did you meet him?”
A Callaway. The way she said that struck me. She said it the same way people said my name. “He’s on vacation visiting his family.”
“Well, you may want to reconsider your relationship. I don’t know that you’ll ever meet anyone else like him. And he is someone who can actually understand your two lives—”
“I’ve gotta go.” I cut her off. The shower turned off and Adam would be able to hear my conversation.
“What time should I tell Roger?”
I had a meeting scheduled in Fayetteville on Wednesday that I could probably move to tomorrow. Squeeze in work and hell all at once. “Two o’clock. Email me the information.”
“You got it.”
“How do you know so much about Adam?” I let my curiosity get the better of me.
The line was eerily quiet for several moments so I slid out of the bedroom and across to Allison’s room while I waited for her response. “How do you not know about Adam Callaway?” she finally said.
“What is that supposed to mean?” He was Adam. His family was local, owned a plantation and a few restaurants, and he designed cars for a living. What else was there to know?
“Lizzy, you may want to look into the man you’re seeing. I don’t care what you call your relationship, but you should know more about who you’re spending your time with.”
“That’s all you’re gonna say?” I was exasperated. And it was very unlike Edita.
“I don’t think it’s my place to say any more. Good luck tomorrow and let me know how it goes.” The line went silent and I stared into the darkness of Allison’s room.
“Babe? Where are you?”
I curled my fingers around the phone and slipped quietly out of Allison’s room. “Sorry,” I held up my phone. “Allison had a quick question about something she thought she left here.” Liar. I was a lying liar.
He leaned up against my bedroom door frame, wearing a pair of navy boxers and a wicked grin. His perfect body on display for me to enjoy. I stopped and took it all in. How do you not know about Adam Callaway? Maybe I hadn’t looked into him more because I didn’t want to know anything else. I knew he was sweet and sexy. I knew he was kind and fun. I didn’t need to know anything else. Not for a two-week affair. But Edita was right—I needed to know who I was spending my time with.
But not tonight. I’d worry about that after I knew if my life was crumbling down around me. A meeting with Roger had never once ended well. There was a very good possibility I’d be looking for a new name and a new home in twenty-four hours. God, I didn’t want to leave Calhoun Beach. I was just starting to settle in here.
“What’s that look on your face?”
I realized I was frowning. “Nothing,” I murmured and walked up to him. His skin was cool as I wrapped myself around him and rested my head against his strong chest. “I’m just tired.”
“Then let’s get in bed,” he said, kissing the top of my head.
Two minutes later I was wrapped around him again, but this time under the covers. His head was propped up on a pillow and I was draped across his chest as he read to me. It was a very old and worn paperback copy of The Firm. The front cover was missing and the pages were slightly curled. It was Adam’s favorite and one I enjoyed as well.
He was reading quietly, but his voice was loud in my ear against his chest. I could hear the different sounds and levels that made up his beautiful voice. His heart was soft, slow, and steady. His skin was soft against mine and his free hand was running lazily up and down my back between turning pages.
I listened as he read about Mitch realizing he was being watched by the firm—that his job wasn’t what he thought it was—that his company was in some deep, dark shit. I related to Mitch and Abby. Their desperation to escape. They just wanted to be happy and in love.
I just wanted to be happy and in love. With Adam.
That was what I was thinking as I drifted off to sleep in his arms, oblivious to the hell that was coming.
