Death at the Pageant Page 6

by Rosie Sams

Together, they walked up Main Street taking in the early morning sights. It was a beautiful morning, and the townspeople buzzed along the street, appearing cheerful about the spring weather. The florist set up a cart filled with various colored flowers near the front door. The owner of the bookstore swept some stray leaves away from his front door whistling an upbeat tune. He waved to Melody and Smudge as they passed.

Just past the bookstore, Melody noticed a woman standing on a ladder in front of the old Port Warren Animal Shelter. She appeared to be trying to hang a large wooden sign over the front door without any help. Smudge also noticed the woman. Her little wet nose twitched as she sniffed the air. Not recognizing her, Smudge pointed her body in the direction of the woman and tugged her leash gently to get Melody’s attention. She wanted to investigate!

“Yep! Let’s go check her out, Smudge.”
