Author notes are something new for me, and I said, no matter what, even if I looked completely…silly (my new favorite word), I’d say whatever I was thinking, and I’d explain what writing this book was like for me.
When I was first approached by Laurie and Michael about writing for 7 Sons, I was excited, and terrified, not necessarily in that order.
They’re both people I look up to, but looking up to them and showing them your work are two completely different things.
Like polar opposite things.
I’m so glad I did though.
Riette was hard for me, at first. She’s this girl, on the last edges of becoming a woman, and she’s coming into her powers but has this chip on her shoulder too. Circumstances put it there, but in this messed up way, she’s proud of having it.
I knew in this book, she would be going through some shit, and I didn’t want her to be happy the entire book, but I wanted her to have moments of joy too.
Everyone deserves those.
So writing this book wasn’t easy, at least initially.
By the end though, there were nights were these characters took over my thoughts, my dreams.
Side note: when you start dreaming about your characters, you’re doing something really right, or really wrong, and in Riette’s case, I’m going with right.
I’m going to be honest. I’m going to look as green as I feel, and as phony as I’m afraid to be.
I’m still a relatively new writer.
I’m full of big ideas, some of which I feel, well, fucking scared to put out there, but this is the first of many scary steps into genres unknown and things I’ll find out if I’m prepared for only when they happen.
So this is my first author note, and I’m face-splitting happy (picture that) that I get to continue on this journey, hopefully that journey includes you.
Thank you.
XOXO,
Ellie
