“You do realize he’s only interested in you for your money,” my mother said.
“He doesn’t care about that,” I replied, trying to keep calm even though her insults bothered me terribly.
My mother only laughed. There would be no convincing her. At least not yet.
Astonishingly enough, my father was okay with my decision.
“I just wanted you to have a plan,” he said. “And this gentleman of yours sounds like a hard working person. You know I admire that.”
“And you don’t care that I’m staying in Monterra to be with a farmer?”
“Does he make you happy?” my father asked.
“Very.”
“Do you love him?”
“I do.”
“That’s all I needed to know.”
“Mum is cross with me.”
“She’ll come around eventually, you’ll see.”
I was hurt and disappointed by my mother’s reaction, but I had expected it, and I chose to think positively and believe that my father was right and that she would eventually accept my decision.
In the meantime, Alessandro and I had a house to decorate and a life to begin together, and it was hard to feel anything but happy after I hung up the phone and looked into his amazing sparkling eyes and at the smile on his face.
Who would have ever thought this was possible? An English Lady living on a farm with the love of her life in Monterra? Impossible or not, being with Alessandro made me the happiest I’d been in my entire life.
I couldn’t ask for a better happily ever after than that.
