Whitney got my name, and I got hers.
“If there’s not a chick fight after these presents are opened, Imma be pissed,” Devante laughs as he looks between the two of us.
He’s come into our friend group too, and become my new partner. We have a lot of fun during our shifts and I wouldn’t trade him for anything.
“My money’s on Whit,” Ryan says from where he sits, nursing his beer.
“Nope, you ain’t seen Ro restrain a drug addict trying to get off her stretcher. My girl Ro is takin’ her down.”
Whitney and I laugh as the group continues to trash talk.
“What do you say?” Sullivan looks up at Cutter.
“I have no dog in this fight. She knows I’ve always got her back.” He tilts his chin at me, giving me a grin I’ve become very accustomed to.
“Should we open together?” I ask looking at Whitney.
“Sure.”
Together we rip open our gifts, each holding up t-shirts and then laughing as we see what they say. The one I gave her says #1 Auburn Fan and the one she gave me says #1 Alabama Fan.
“This is perfect,” Ruby laughs. “I need you two to come stand over here next to the tree so I can take a picture.”
The two of us are standing, smiling brightly when the flash goes off. “Damn, Ruby, that thing can be seen in outer space.”
I close my eyes and then open them, trying to get the dots out of my vision. When I look over to say something to Whitney, she’s no longer there. Cutter is, and holy hell he’s down on one knee.
“Cutter?”
“Yeah?” He grins.
“Is this what I think it is?”
We’ve talked about it. Maybe getting married. Even though I’ve done it once, it wasn’t right, nothing about it was what it should have been. I’ve mentioned I’d be willing to try it with him.
“If you want it, if you want me, and my crazy ass group of friends and family, I want you.”
“We want you,” Holden says from where he stands behind Leigh, holding her hand.
“Aunt Ro!”
That comes from Keegan, and I dissolve into tears, looking down at Cutter.
“Will you marry me?” he asks, bringing his bottom lip between his teeth. I can’t believe he’s nervous that I’ll say no.
“Yes!” I fall down to the ground, taking him in my arms.
In a flurry of hugs, kisses, well-wishes, and everything in between, he puts the ring on my finger, and I get a moment alone with Sullivan.
“He asked me, you know.”
“Did he?”
“Yeah, he asked Dad too, but he asked me, and I told him I can’t think of a better man for my sister. He’s everything you deserve, Ro. Don’t let him go.”
“I won’t.” I reach in, hugging him tightly. “Are you going to look at Christmas lights with us?”
We’re heading out as a group in a few minutes to look at all the decorated houses.
“Nah, I’m gonna get Shelby home.” He points to the lawyer. “She’s had a little too much to drink.”
Judging by her red face and bright eyes, Sullivan’s right.
“Be safe,” I tell him, hugging him again.
“You too.”
As we all head in our own directions, I hop into the bed of Ransom’s truck, sitting next to Cutter, wrapped up to keep the cold air from getting to my skin. We have a group of vehicles ten deep, as we slowly make our way through the neighborhoods.
Sometime during all this, Keegan comes over and sits with me, and when I look down, he’s asleep, curled up in my lap.
Cutter kisses me on the forehead before looking down at his nephew. “We’ll have this one day, Ro. I promise you.”
I smile, kissing him on the cheek. “I know.”
And I do, because after everything I’ve been through, I finally found my fairytale. They aren’t always easy, but they’re definitely worth it.
