The Deadly Thirst: A WJ Lundy Short Page 8

by W. J. Lundy

  “Did you drink it?”

“Well, I sure as hell didn’t paint a picture with it. And you know, I am not much of a cider drinker but it isn’t bad. I appreciate your generosity,” he said with a sarcastic snicker.

A call from an officer at the roadblock turned the cop around. “Reid, let’s go, man. I’m so damn hungry I could eat the back end out of a water buffalo.” Reid nodded and pointed a finger at the man.

The Stetson wearing cop spun back facing the two men. “Listen, we haven’t eaten, and to tell you the truth, I’m starving myself. That cider kicked up a hell of an appetite in me. So listen, I really don’t have time to play with you two. Can I count on you fools to make it back to the station on your own?”

Herb nodded. “I think we can manage it.”

Reid shook his head at the two of them disgustedly. Wyatt and Herb stood on the road watching while the vehicles loaded up and pulled away.

“So, should we follow them?” Wyatt asked.

  “Nahh, I’d rather go fishing.”

  Epilogue

5 miles outside of Las Vegas, Nevada.

The strange men sat in a corner booth of a dingy diner off Highway 15. The duo intentionally chose a table next to the front window so they could keep a close eye on the tall delivery truck outside. Cups of coffee sat on the table top untouched. The men sat across from each other, one with a stack of order forms and a ball point pen to his front. From the angry scowls it was apparent there was no love lost between the two.

A heavily pregnant waitress chomping a wad of chewing gum approached the table with a coffee pot. She topped off the already full glasses and looked down at a man leaning awkwardly against the window. “Dang, hunny, you don’t look so good,” she said, giving the man a disgusted look.

The man’s companion laughed. “Nonsense, don’t worry about him, he’s just hungover. Nothing a nice steak and egg breakfast won’t fix. Maybe a nice cider even?”

The waitress nodded and copied the order onto her notepad. “How you want that cooked, hun?” she asked.

“Make it a double order and tartare every bit of it,” the sickly man said in a thick cockney accent. “And skip the eggs.”
