  “You’re awake Miss Blake.”

Alexa turned to see a man standing at the bottom of her bed in a white coat. She guessed a doctor.

“So it would appear. How long have I been here?” she replied.

“You were found unconscious by the guards yesterday morning and have been unconscious since they brought you in.”

“And how long was that?” Alexa asked.

“Just over twenty four hours,” the doctor replied.

  “So its Wednesday afternoon then.”

“Yes it is. It would seem you took quite a beating. Any idea who did this?”

Alexa knew better than to tell him what had happened, it would only make matters worse. She had enough to deal with without alienating the guards as well.

  “No idea.”

“Well you have some cracked ribs and lots of bruising to most of your body.”

  “Not too bad then.”

“You need to be checked out at the hospital though as I’m not sure if there is any damage to your kidneys as there is a lot of bruising around that area. So I am going to send you for a scan.”

  “And when will that be?”

“Well it’s not like we can just pop you over there, we need to book an appointment and the guards to go with you. So a couple of days.”

  “Okay, thank you.”

“For now you will stay here until you have been to the hospital and we get the results back from your scan.”

Alexa was glad she was staying put, it might keep her safe for now at least. The trip to the hospital might turn out to be an opportunity. An opportunity she would take as soon as she had the chance.

  Thirty Three

Felicia was sat up in her hospital bed as Frank Trainer entered the room.

  “Hello Frank.”

  “Mrs Fenner,” Frank replied

  “Is she dead yet?”

Frank knew who Felicia was talking about, Alexa. He had been keeping in touch with the warden of the prison where she was being held. He had shown concern for her wellbeing, he didn’t really care. He needed Alexa dead. She knew he was in the pocket of Felicia, but she also knew that he was the one that had told Felicia about Tracey and how she had been speaking to Alexa about her drug and people trafficking business. Tracey had ended up dead because of him and the last time he saw Alexa he could see in her face that if she had the chance she would kill him.

“No, she is still alive,” he informed Felicia.

“I think its time they finished the job on her don’t you?”

“That may be more difficult now.”

  “Why?” Felicia asked angrily.

“She is in the prison hospital wing. Some of the guards beat her.”

“What the fuck were they playing at. I own that prison. The governor, the guards, the prisoners. They belong to me and they do what I tell them to.”

“They had to do something. Alexa had taken out four of the inmates who they had lined up to have a bit of fun with her.”

  “Four?” Felicia’s anger was rising.

“How the fuck did she take out four of them?” the words spat out of her mouth as the anger in her grew. She wanted this woman dead now.

“I have no idea, but she left one with a broken nose, two with a crushed larynx and one with concussion.”

“And what were the guards doing. Just watching?”

“She managed to take out one of the inmates and use her to block the gate. She was a big girl so the guards couldn’t get into the exercise yard.”

“Thats enough. Once she is back in population I want her dead. No messing, no playing, just make sure she dies.”

  “I will let them know.”

Frank turned to leave, but Felicia called after him.

“Frank, make sure it is done. She has as much on you as she has on me and if you become a liability then I will remove the liability.”

Frank knew exactly what she meant and he also knew she would carry out the threat. He had come to realise over the years that Felicia was ruthless and had no issues with removing people that got in her way or were a ‘liability’ as she put it.

While Felicia was ordering the extinction of Alexa, Letitia was playing her final hand with Drew. What she was about to do was a risk, she could alienate him completely, if she did then she was on her own and she would have no idea what to do next. If this didn’t work it would more than likely mean the end for both Alexa and herself.

“Are you sure you can’t help?” Letitia pleaded.

“I don’t see how I can,” replied Drew.

Letitia chose her next words carefully.

“You may have some IT skills that...”

  She paused.

  “That what?” Drew asked.

“That maybe you thought I didn’t know about when we were an item.”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

Letitia knew that Drew knew exactly what skills she meant. While they were lovers at University she had once used his laptop and had accidentally come across emails that talked about a hacking group. The groups mission was to bring down what they saw as corrupt bosses and officials and from the emails it looked like Drew was one of the leaders. Letitia had known he was good at computer’s but she had no idea what the emails actually meant so had spent time researching all about the group. They had been attributed with bringing down the bosses of some of the biggest companies in the world and purportedly even brought down corrupt governments. She had never been able to ask him about it as they had gone their separate ways as Drew finished his University course and she could never find the right moment to talk to him about it. Well now was the time.

“Cut the crap Drew,” Letitia dove straight in, she didn’t have time for niceties anymore.

“Again, what are you talking about?”

“You were a member of a hacking group, quite a big group and from what I saw at University you were one of the leaders.”

“How...What...When,” Drew couldn’t finish his sentence so Letitia did.

“I borrowed your laptop once and saw a bunch of emails about the group and your involvement.”

“You really shouldn’t have seen those.”

“Well I did and now I need your help.”

“Okay, tell me what you need and then I will see if I can help. No promises though.”

Letitia smiled at him, she had hoped he would cave in and he had. Maybe there was hope after all.

It had only been hours since Alexa had learnt that she would be going to the hospital for a scan tomorrow. After her performance in the exercise yard the guards were on edge, they wouldn’t let her out of their sight, she had shown how dangerous she could be. She knew this was going to be her only chance to get out of the position she was in, if she didn’t then she would die in prison, they would just increase the number of attackers until she had no chance of survival. She had been making plans for the last few hours, working out how she could break away from her guards. She knew she was having a scan and that was probably going to be the only time she would be alone. She had no idea what the room layout would be but that would have to be the time to make her escape. There was one missing key element, even if she could escape her guards she would need transport, she would need Letitia, she would need her mobile. She needed a friend to get it from her cell, maybe Harmony would be of use after all.

  Thirty Four

Alexa had slept well, she was starting to feel more like herself. The beating the guards had given her had cracked a few ribs and given her some lovely bruising but she didn’t think it had caused any lasting damage. She was doing a very good impression of a woman in pain though, she didn’t want to go back to her cell and she didn’t want them to cancel her hospital appointment, that was going to be her one chance of escape. It would be time for breakfast soon and she hoped it would be brought in by Harmony, she needed it to be Harmony.

Alexa could hear the trolley coming down the corri
dor, she sat up in her bed and stared at the door. She needed the person pushing the trolley to be Harmony, she needed her to be the next person through the door that she was so carefully concentrating on. Harmony had been in the prison for years and had privileges most of the other inmates didn’t have. Alexa needed clothes for her hospital visit and it would be Harmony who would be sent to collect them. If Alexa could get to her first then she hoped that Harmony could collect the mobile that she had hidden in her cell, she needed that mobile to contact Letitia once she was away from her guards at the hospital.

The door swung open and a guard walked in and held it open for the breakfast trolley to come through. Alexa found herself pushing forward on her hands, willing the next person to be Harmony. Eventually the front of the trolley appeared through the door, followed by Harmony. Alexa let out a sigh of relief and relaxed back into her bed, she would get her mobile, her plan was starting to come together.

Trainer was sat in what was once Alexa’s office, he was acting Detective Inspector now that Alexa was suspended pending investigation. The investigation would of course relieve her of her command and ultimately her job. She had plead guilty to murder and attempted murder so it was a foregone conclusion. He didn’t want the job full time, he didn’t want the stress and it would also make it more difficult for him and the arrangement he had with Felicia Fenner. He would be happy when they got a full time replacement. The investigation into Alexa would also be inconvenient for him and Felicia so it was a necessity that Alexa not be around for it, she had to be dealt with and dealt with soon. He felt his jacket pocket buzz, he took his phone from it and looked at the screen and answered the call.

  “Trainer.”

“Alexa will be going to King George hospital tomorrow. Her appointment is for eleven AM so will leave at ten AM.”

  The caller hung up.

Trainer navigated his phone to WhatsApp and sent a message.

Our problem is leaving the prison at ten AM and will be at King George Hospital at eleven AM.

He put his phone back in his jacket pocket. He knew that Alexa wouldn’t be leaving the hospital alive.

  Thirty Five

Harmony had collected the clothes that Alexa needed to attend her hospital scan. She had also found the mobile that Alexa had hidden in the cell and brought that to her as well. The mobile was key to her plan, without it she would never get away from the hospital. She would think about what came next once she was away from the danger of the prison. Getting Felicia and now Trainer to pay Recompense for their crimes was high on her list but she couldn’t do that if she wasn’t alive. The curtains around her bed had been drawn so she could dress. She put her clothes on and then was thankful that her mobile was small as she pushed it between the cheeks of her bottom and squeezed tight to hold on to it. She knew that she would be searched before she left the prison and although it was uncomfortable it was the only place she could think of that would avoid the search. The curtains swung open and two guards were stood in front of her.

“Its a good job I was dressed,” she said to the guards.

“You haven’t got anything I haven’t had before,” laughed the male guard.

Alexa stared him in the eyes.

“Try to take this and I will treat you to the same that the little bitches in the exercise yard got.”

  The guard turned away.

  “Search her.”

The female guard patted Alexa down and checked her pockets. Alexa squeezed onto her mobile a little tighter as she was patted down in the bottom area, just to make sure she didn’t find the mobile. The female guard nodded to her partner.

“Hands in front of you,” he said to Alexa.

She did as ordered and handcuffs were put around her wrists.

“You step out of line and you will feel my baton.”

“You think you will get that close,” Alexa replied with a smile.

The male guard stepped forward, his nose nearly touching Alexa’s.

“I will get as close as I like and if the baton doesn’t work then I will just use the taser. In fact I may just use that for the fun of it.”

“It’s the only fun you will ever get,” Alexa goaded.

The female guard pushed Alexa in the back and they left the hospital wing of the prison and started the journey to the hospital. This was going to be Alexa’s chance, her only chance of survival.

Felicia was flicking through the TV channels as two people entered her private room.

“All these fucking channels and still nothing to watch,” she said.

A man and woman stood at the end of her bed. Felicia threw the TV remote onto the end of the bed and looked up at them. It amused her to have a brother and sister hit team on her payroll, it was the quirky kind of thing she liked. She had met Pasha and Ionna on a trip to Georgia to organise a consignment of girls. They had been assigned as her bodyguards on the trip by her Georgian contact and she had seen their skills at first hand as they took out one of the girls parents when they tried to stop their daughter being taken. She knew then that she needed them back in the UK to work as her personal execution team.

“Do you know what you have to do?” she asked of them.

“Yes. Alexa Blake doesn’t leave this hospital alive,” replied Pasha.

“Her appointment is at eleven AM and she is having a scan so you need to find out where that will be. I don’t care how it is done but I want her to know that I sent you.”

“Do you want it clean or should she suffer?” asked Ionna.

“If you can make her suffer even better, just make sure she doesn’t survive. I want her dead.”

  “Consider it done.”

Pasha and Ionna turned and left the room. Felicia stretched for the TV remote and went back to flicking through the channels. She was happy, she knew that with her personal team on the job Alexa would not be alive much longer.

The journey to the hospital had not been the most comfortable one. She had travelled in the back of a police car flanked by her two guards. It hadn’t been the closeness of the guards that had made it uncomfortable, it had been her mobile phone. The fact there were three of them in the back seat had made it impossible to position herself, she would be glad when she could remove the mobile. She needed to visit the toilet as soon as possible.

“I need the toilet,” Alexa said.

“You will have to wait,” replied the male guard.

“The doctor says I should go often until they know the level of damage caused to my kidneys from your beating.”

Alexa knew full well there wasn’t anything wrong with her apart from some sore ribs and bruising but she needed to keep up the act to ensure she got this visit to the hospital.

“Fine, as soon as we get into the building you can go,” he replied.

Alexa also knew that if they were going to scan her kidneys she needed to have a full bladder, going to the toilet would help her get hold of her mobile and text Letitia but it would also give her time as she would need to drink lots before she could be scanned. She needed that time to let Letitia get to the hospital, she had no idea where she was or if she would even help. The male guard got out of the car first followed by Alexa and the female guard. They walked, one at each side of her into the hospital reception area.

“There’s a toilet over there,” said Alexa.

“Okay, but she goes with you,” replied the male guard.

Alexa and the female guard entered the toilet, it was empty.

“Make it quick,” the guard said.

Alexa entered a cubicle and removed her trousers and underwear. Before she sat she removed the mobile from its hiding place. She sat and then used toilet paper to wipe the mobile. As she relieved herself she sent Letitia a text.

At King George. Come pick me up in the car park.

  * * *

At the same time Alexa was sending her text, Pasha and Ionna were preparing for the job they
had been given. It wasn’t a job they were unfamiliar with, they had liquidated more people than they could count for Felicia. They left the hospital and returned to the car they had parked in the corner of one of the many hospital car parks. It was parked away from prying eyes and the CCTV cameras. They opened the boot of the car and lifted the carpet covering the trunk floor to reveal a foam filled area that had various weapons slotted into spaces. They had the choice of knives, sidearms and a sub machine gun.

“What is your weapon of choice sister?” asked Pasha.

“I don’t think the sub will be any good here. We need to do this quietly and then just get out.”

“Agreed. Knife if possible and the Beretta 9mm with a suppressor if not.”

The two of them took a knife each and slipped them into a sheath that was attached to their belt and then hid it with their jackets. They then took a Beretta each and screwed a suppressor to the end. They checked the magazine was full, racked it to ensure one was in the chamber and placed it in the shoulder holsters under their jackets and zipped them up. They were ready. They walked back to the reception of the hospital. Ionna walked to the left out of sight while Pasha walked to the lady on the reception.

“Hi, I am really sorry to ask a stupid question but my wife is having a scan today and I don’t know where to go.”

“That’s not a problem sir. Is it a maternity scan?” asked the receptionist.

“Oh no, she isn’t pregnant,” replied Pasha.

“In that case then it will be on the second floor, east wing. Just follow the signs for outpatient ultrasound.”

  “Thank you very much.”

Pasha turned and headed for the lift, followed by Ionna.
