Siren of Depravity Page 20

by Gary Fry

“They’re out there, Daddy,” she says, her voice little more than an exhalation of awe and fear. “I know they are. But I can’t speak too loudly. They might hear and come visiting again.”

I look at the stars, and think about my daughter’s role as the true siren of depravity. Then, holding back tears, I move reluctantly away to where my wife lies waiting in our bedroom, her back turned to me.

I cry almost every night, and often dream about terrible creatures, still scattered across this vulnerable planet, waiting to rise and make monsters of us all.
