He reached up to open a cupboard above me, his chest sliding against my back. Music filtered into the room from hidden speakers that made it sound like we were standing in the middle of an orchestra playing. His fingers found mine as he swung me around and dipped me low. I loved dancing, but no one ever wanted to dance anymore. The world was filled with wine bars and pubs with televisions in them.
A giggle bubbled up from my chest as he tugged me against his body, the fingers from one hand intertwined with mine, the other on my hip. Closing my eyes, I snuggled into his heat.
Could relationships be this easy?
Dare I take a chance and risk my heart?
Xavier hummed in my ear, spinning me every so often to make me laugh. There was no clumsiness between us, even when he dragged me into his heat again. Normally, you were unsure if you could touch the person on a date, or what the etiquette was. This was different because no barriers existed between us since we’d been intimate with each other already. Xavier had explored my body like no man before him.
“What are you thinking?” he murmured into my ear.
“If I should risk my heart on you.” As soon as the words tumbled out unbidden, I wanted to run and hide.
Xavier leaned back to smile down at me. “You should definitely take a chance on us.”
Us.
There had never been an “us” in any of my previous relationships, and Xavier changed what I said from risking my heart on him to risking it for us.
“Your company has just signed a massive contract with my firm. What happens if this doesn’t work? What if what we had in the dark doesn’t work in the light?” He had no idea how much I wanted to stay in his arms because they were the first place I’d felt safe since my family died.
He lifted me to set me on the counter and step between my legs. His blue gaze bored into mine. “I’ve never felt this way about anyone before, Cas. It has nothing to do with darkness and light, or about what worlds we come from. I want to be with you, it’s that simple. Stop finding hurdles to jump and let’s try this.”
My head fell forward until it rested on his shoulder. “I’m scared,” I whispered.
“So am I, but I can’t let you walk away again, Cas. It’s not an option.”
I finally met his eyes. “Can we take it slowly? I’m not good at relationships and don’t want to mess this up…” Vulnerability caught up with me again and I dipped my head.
Xavier lifted my chin up with gentle fingers. “We’ll take all the time you need. I’m all in for this, Cas, never doubt that.”
An idea suddenly popped into my head. “Um… What about The Midnight Rooms?” Did a relationship mean that he would be splitting his time between me and the women down there?
He leaned over me until I was nearly on my back on the counter. “The only woman who has access to me is you, baby. If you want to use the Midnight or Twilight Rooms, the only man who gets to enjoy your body there is me. Is that clear enough for you?”
“I enjoyed our time in The Midnight Rooms and have always been intrigued by The Twilight Rooms and what goes on there,” I admitted in a low tone.
“I’ll teach you everything you want to know about what happens in The Twilight Rooms when you’re ready.”
“This is happening too fast…”
He shook his head, a smile tugging his beautiful lips. “No more hurdles. All I ask is that no matter what you hear about me that you remember the world sees one version of me and you get the real me.”
It was crazy and stupid and there was a huge list of why I shouldn’t do this, but when Xavier’s lips met mine, every single one of them evaporated. All that was left was the feeling that I’d finally found the right person.
A long time ago, Mum told me that every single person had a soulmate—someone who was the other half of their soul that complemented them and made them happy. When you found that person you’d know instinctively, and that she knew the first time she met Dad she was going to marry him one day.
Maybe it was crazy or stupid, but for the first time I believed her.
Wrapping my arms around his neck, I dragged Xavier down until he settled in the cradle of my thighs. He laughed when I nearly made him fall over.
“I’m going to have to watch myself around you,” he joked. “You’re already bossing me around.”
“The only thing I’ll demand from you is orgasms,” I retorted with a cheeky wink.
“I think I can manage that…” His teeth bit into his bottom lip when he cast his smouldering gaze over me, making me shiver.
Tragedy happened every day, so in this moment I decided to grab whatever happiness was on offer. Tomorrow could be filled with regret, but tonight belonged only to Xavier and me.
I gasped as he threw me over his shoulder and strode out of the room. “Where are we going?” I demanded.
“Thought I’d give you a tour of the rest of the house, starting with the bedroom.”
I couldn’t stop giggling when he threw me on a huge four-poster bed in the middle of a room decorated in black and shades of gold to highlight the accents of the architecture. My mirth died as he crawled over me.
“Tell me your mine,” he demanded in a tone that made my thighs tighten and my stomach flip.
“I’m yours,” I whispered, slowly lying back on the softest bed in the world.
He dragged me up to stand in front of him. “Now that you’re real, I get to see all of you in the light.” His fingers traced from the centre of my throat down between my breasts to the top of my pelvic bone.
My throat contracted in a nervous swallow, the ghosts of all the negative comments I’d received about my body over the years coming back to haunt me.
“Eyes on me, baby,” Xavier commanded. “I guarantee I’ll love what I see, considering I’ve already seen every inch of you with my touch.”
My lips pursed together, and I took a deep breath to calm my nerves.
He stepped forward, his fingers lifting my chin, so I met his heated gaze. “Keep your eyes on me.”
My jumper slid over my skin, goosebumps emerging on my flesh as I dropped it to the floor. His eyes were locked on mine, sending strength into my bones and filling me with courage. My boots and jeans followed until I stood in matching panties and bra.
Xavier slowly walked around me, his fingers gently trailing over my skin. “You’re gorgeous,” he muttered under his breath.
I gasped as his fingers released the clasp on my bra and my breasts bounced free of their restraint. His thumbs slipped down the sides of my panties to send them sliding down my legs.
This was the moment I dreaded, when there was nowhere left for me to hide. His hands reacquainted themselves with my body’s topography, lips following in their wake. My eyes fluttered shut when he landed on his knees at my feet to lift one leg over his shoulder.
Xavier’s tongue was a weapon of mass seduction, every sweep and flick making my hips jolt to the tune he was creating. My fingers threaded into his hair to stabilise myself before I fell over.
Too much, the pressure in my stomach became unbearable. His fingers and tongue made me writhe with abandon, my stomach muscles desperately trying to hold me steady.
My back arched and my grip tightened in his hair as pleasure exploded from my core to radiate out to my limbs. Xavier grabbed my ass to hold me steady as he worked my clit until my knees began to tremble.
“Please,” I pleaded for mercy from his sensual onslaught.
He placed my leg back on the floor and I watched his tall frame straighten until he towered over me. Xavier dragged his sweatshirt and T-shirt off as one unit, his jeans hitting the floor with a thud.
My gaze ran from the deltoids and biceps of his shoulders and arms, to the pectoral muscles on his chest, and on down to the taut six-pack on his abdomen. Xavier possessed the magical V at his hips that I was beginning to think didn’t exist in the real world.
I finally caught sight of the piercing that had been driving me insane. Tentativ
ely, I reached out to run my thumb over it, his cock straining toward me.
Xavier paced forward until he had me backed against the wall. “We’re not using condoms,” he stated. All I could do was move my open-mouthed stare from his handsome face to the naked appendage pointing at me.
He didn’t wait for an answer, instead lifting me until his lips met mine and my legs wrapped around his waist. For someone who never kissed, he was sensational at it. His lips nibbled mine until my mouth opened in a moan, his tongue stroking mine. Lost in a world of sensation, my eyes jolted open when he suddenly thrust into me. The piercing rubbed against my g-spot as I felt the full-force of it now that there was no barrier between us.
His hands gripped my ass as he pummelled into me, his forehead resting on my shoulder. My back scraped against the wall as the bottom of my spine battered into it. I was impaled over and over again until that delicious pressure began to build once more.
Xavier’s cock thickened and pulsed inside me, his growl echoing down my flesh until it vibrated along his cock. We both screamed our release together as Xavier held himself deep in my core and I milked him.
He carried us to the bed, falling on his back so I straddled his hips.
Bracing myself on his chest, I leaned forward until our lips touched in a barely-there caress. “Please don’t break me,” I whispered.
His hands cupped my face so he could stare up at me. “This is it for me,” he replied, his gaze steady. “I promise to do everything in my power to make you happy. Just stay with me and give us a chance.”
His eyes said everything his words didn’t. My heart flipped before beating rapidly. Slowly, I nodded before bringing my lips back to his.
Only time would reveal if Xavier and I could conquer the obstacles in our path. He already owned my body and my heart, and now all that was left was my soul. I did something that I hadn’t done since I’d stood beside three graves in a cold churchyard.
I prayed.
It was just a whisper in my mind, but I prayed that we would make it because I’d finally found someone who made me happy.
Xavier rolled me over, tickling my sides. I screamed and kicked my legs, giggling as his lips met mine in a kiss that curled my toes.
We’d found each other in the dark.
Then discovered each other in the light.
All we needed to do was love each other into our future.
