“Mirabella? You there? You have to help me. Lorenzo is crazy now. He thinks Carlo will kill Marietta, he has me in Spain and...”
“Slow down. Tell me everything.”
Catalina gave her a full update on her life since they last met, including the wedding. And then told her that Lorenzo made a threat if Marietta and the baby were harmed. Mirabella could not offer her sister in law any words of encouragement. She was totally bereft of empathy. And she didn’t like that feeling.
“I need to tell you something. Catalina, I’m so sorry, Rocco died today.”
The screams she heard on the other line shook Mirabella from her zombie like numbness and broke through. She cried into the phone with Catalina before someone intervened and took the phone from Catalina.
“Mirabella!” Lorenzo snapped on the line. “Where is she? You know where she is! Tell me! Mirabella! Answer me damnit. Where is she? Tell Giovanni I will burn everything he and I have worked for over the past ten years, if he doesn’t give her back to me! Tell him I said if he wants war, it starts now. Carlo better not lay a fucking finger on her! Do you hear me? Not a fucking finger! Tell him!” he shouted and she could hear Catalina crying in the background.
“Lorenzo, Rocco is dead.”
She hung up on him. Mirabella squeezed her eyes tightly shut and forced herself to deal with her grief. Nothing worked. But eventually she was strong enough to find her husband. He sat in the room, in the dark. His face rested against his finger and thumb.
“Gio, it’s bad for Catalina now... Armando is dead... she married him... Lorenzo is panicking... I told them about Rocco... It’s all falling apart.”
Giovanni nodded “You did good Bella.”
She closed the door. She walked over to him in the dark. He took her hand and rubbed across his jaw and kissed it.
She was then pulled down to his lap. She sat cradled there as his chair dipped back and his arms held her. His hand found her belly and his lips brushed her neck. She closed her eyes and prepared for a new future with him. One that brought her out of her shadows and made her his true wife.
This was the Mafia. And she was his Bella. To the bitter end.
