  AFTERWORD

I believe Kate Stine first introduced Doug to me at a conference over 20 years ago. He was finishing his definitive biography of John Dickson Carr, and I was researching my biography of Craig Rice. I cheered when his biography was nominated for an Edgar, and after my biography was published, he asked me to edit a collection of Craig Rice stories for Crippen & Landru. I was thrilled to participate and fell in love with the publishing house.

Besides our shared enjoyment of Golden Age Detection authors, we also shared a passion for education. Doug was a professor, where I teach middle school. Over the years, we chatted about books, many of which he’d published.

I had been introduced to mysteries at an early age. I’d read my first Agatha Christie (The Underdog and Other Stories – of course a short story collection) at the age of 14 and started collecting first editions over the years. I have a complete collection of the American first editions of Agatha Christie now, and I’ve expanded my collection to include signed copies of Craig Rice, Anthony Boucher and Ellery Queen, all of course American first editions. Due to the volumes that Crippen & Landru has produced, I’ve added Patrick Quentin/Q Patrick/Jonathan Stagge to my list of collectibles as well. It makes for a full, but happy house.

In the summer of 2014, I volunteered to help Doug get the Crip
pen & Landru website back in shape. I had twenty years as an IT specialist in a previous life, so that didn’t seem like a daunting task. The site had a problem with its SSL certificate, in case anyone is dying to know.

After the certificate issue was fixed, I saw some other ways to improve the site. By October, I’d upgraded the website to include a variety of different functionalities, email notifications, reviews, search capabilities and more. By December, I’d added information on upcoming books, and I’d added pages for eBooks too. At some point during all the improvements, I was hooked.

I spent the next two years upgrading the website and creating a number of eBooks for our readers. I still enjoy these tasks. Sometime during this time period, Doug named me as the Director of Development, a title I thought more than sufficient since I enjoyed everything about Crippen & Landru.

Fast forward to 2018, and I took the reins of Crippen & Landru. Doug has stayed on as Senior Editor. It’s been scary, wonderful, and amazing all at once. Doug and I have mapped out a cornucopia of mystery collections over the next four years, and I can’t wait to be able to introduce you all to familiar authors and new-to-you writers.

  Subscriptions

Subscribers agree to purchase each forthcoming publication, either the Regular Series or the Lost Classics or (preferably) both. Collectors can thereby guarantee receiving limited editions, and readers won’t miss any favorite stories.

Subscribers receive a discount of 20% off the list price (and the same discount on our backlist) and a specially commissioned short story by a major writer in a deluxe edition as a gift at the end of the year.

The point for us is that, since customers don’t pick and choose which books they want, we have a guaranteed sale even before the book is published, and that allows us to be more imaginative in choosing short story collections to issue.

That’s worth the 20% discount for us. Sign up now and start saving. Email us at [email protected] or visit our website at www.crippenlandru.com on our subscription page.
