Secrets & Dark Magic Page 13

“You sound jaded,” Katz said, looking far too wise. “But I think you kinda fell for them too. You actually cared whether or not they got together, didn’t you?”

“Uh yeah,” Delilah said. “I’m not gonna get any brownie points if I don’t and worst case, they’ll bump me down again. Probably end up in the Department of Saying Excuse me on a Bus or something.”

Katz was shaking his head. He clearly did not believe her. Which she found very annoying. He ordered himself a cocktail that looked like a glowing cloud in a glass. “Right,” he said. “And it had nothing at all to do with you actually caring whether Cole and Penny got together and saved the city.”

“No,” Delilah said firmly. “I mean they were kind of perfect for each other, it would’ve been stupid if they hadn’t coupled up, but that’s just being…pragmatic.” Even that sounded too soft and it made her uncomfortable so she took another sip and said, “Ya’ know, in my earth life, I once worked for a guy who hunted shifters. Cole would’ve ended up his area rug.”

“You don’t fool me for a second,” Katz said.

“Is the Council happy about it?” Delilah said, not quite looking at him.

“They weren’t happy that you intervened so directly,” Katz said darkly, and Delilah couldn’t help the little spike of anxiety that gave her. She’d never been one to follow the rules. In fact, she thought she was doing a pretty good job of it, considering. But that particular rule seemed far too restrictive.

  “Yeah?” She muttered.

“But I made your case,” Katz said. “Swayed Gavrill anyway.”

“You made my case?” Delilah said, blinking at him. “Why? How?”

“Because I think you’re pretty good at this,” Katz said, shrugging. “I was the one keeping an eye on you while you were on your mission. The council doesn’t have time to watch everyone. They also don’t like having to mess with people’s memories too much, making them forget they saw an angelic agent.”

“Hmph.” She felt herself blush just a tiny bit at the thought that Katz had been watching her in action the whole time. She couldn’t think why. She was pretty sure she’d never had occasion to blush even once in her time as a human.

“But,” Katz said, “even if Penny and Cole don’t remember what happened, they know somebody helped them and they can’t explain it. And the truth is, humans love that. It gives them hope that maybe the universe is on their side. They like the idea that somebody out there has their back. It gives ‘em’ a boost. You know?”

“A guardian angel,” Delilah said, sighing.

  “Yes!”

  “I’m not an angel!”

“It doesn’t matter!” Katz threw an arm around her shoulders. “Let the humans think what they want. To them, you’re a guardian angel.” He clinked her glass with his. “Cheers.”

“Cheers,” Delilah said, but she tried to sound sarcastic about it.

“I’m glad I found you anyway,” Katz said, as he took a sip of his glowing cloud. “The council wants to see you in an hour.”

“New mission?” Delilah asked, and it was strange that she found herself actually looking forward to it.

“That’s what I hear,” Katz said.

  “You got any details?”

“She’s a fox shifter,” Katz said, shrugging. “He’s a wolf.”

“Wait…” Delilah chortled, shaking her head. “That doesn’t make any sense. Shifters of different species don’t mix. Not ever. Even the ones that mix with humans don’t mix with different shifters. Trust me, I’ve known a lot of shifters.”

“I know they don’t.” He clapped her on the back. “They’re star-crossed. Good luck with that one.”

Delilah groaned and sank her head in her hands. “A fox and a wolf fall in love? That’s gonna be impossible. And you’re laughing at me!” She shot him a dirty look even as he covered his mouth, stifling his delight.

“Hey, it’s not my fault you’re so cute when you’re annoyed,” Katz said, and he downed the rest of his cloud.

Now, Delilah was definitely blushing and she was starting to wonder if it was some unfortunate side-effect from doing nice things on earth. “I am not,” she grumbled. “I’ve never been cute. And humans are stupid and so are shifters and love is dumb and I don’t care about it at all.” She smiled, triumphant.

Katz reached out and booped her nose with the tip of his finger. “You’re delusional.”

“Shut up, Katz,” Delilah said. But when he turned to talk to the Duke, she found herself smiling just a little.
