Whirl Page 13

“I’m sure he doesn’t need that many raspberries blown on his tummy. Give the little guy a break!” I chastise good naturedly.

“He smells great and feels nice. I can’t help it.”

I lean over and pull him to me and kiss him softly on the mouth, my arms around his neck. “Save some love for me, won’t you?”

“I’ve always got lots left for you, you know that.” He sinks into me deeply for a moment, his tongue licking mine, holding me tight and stirring me up. Then he drops a kiss on my nose. “Later, baby.”

William rolls over and sits up. After blowing a massive dribbly bubble, which oddly, I find absolutely adorable, he starts to crawl off away from his daddy. He sits back on his heels, looking behind him, giggling in his 9 month old way and showing off his cute four toothed smile. Daddy takes off after him, chasing him around the armchair on his hands and knees.

  I smile inside and out.

Things have gone from strength to strength between us over the last 17 months. From the moment he found out about the baby, Alex has been nothing but wonderful and supportive. All the way through the worrying blood pressure problems in later pregnancy, and the induced very long birth which resulted in an emergency C-section. He was there every minute of it, loving me, holding my hand and keeping me calm.

I can remember every second of the operation. I felt the odd sensation of tugging in my insides when they lifted William out. He was a very big baby. Over nine pounds. Too big for someone of my size really. I saw the overwhelmed teary look in Alex's eyes when they placed his bloodied newborn son in his hands. He is rarely speechless, but he was at that moment. Choked and stunned with emotion. It was love at first sight. The two of them are inseparable. The three of us are in truth.

Thank heavens the Middle East crisis never blew up into a major war. We’ve been together ever since he arrived back from Riyad.

He sorted out my immigration and visa requirements after we flew back together where we had a small family wedding in California.

My parents live in the US now too, in sunny Florida, for the past 8 months since they sold up and moved themselves across the Atlantic. They are definitely enjoying their warm retirement so far. Just a cheap internal flight once a month and they can spend a day or two with their growing family.

And growing it is. I rub my swelling stomach. Only another six months to go and our family will be complete. A little brother or sister for William. Baby Connor or Amelia. Those are the names we have already chosen. Will is a gorgeous little boy, so happy and full of fun, and a ‘dead spit’ of Alex as a baby according to Great Granny Jackson. He has been such an easy baby. A complete contrast to the trouble he caused before he was born... The morning sickness which dragged on and on forever, then the drama with the birth... As far as babies go, he is an angel. He eats like a horse, sleeps like a log and smiles non stop all day. That's probably why Alex persuaded me so easily to try for another so soon. I realise I'm very lucky and not all babies are like this. Anyway, it's done now and so far so good, there's been no morning sickness at all second time around.

I gaze around my new house with happiness, looking outside into the evening sunlit yard. I’ve become a regular home bird. Alex’s minimalistic apartment is nothing like the untidy toy littered mess we now live in.

The door bell sounds and Alex answers it with Will tucked under his arm like a football. Toni arrives in the room with Brendan and Courtney and a heap of bags and baby stuff. Their baby is five and a half months old. She’s an adorable chubby bundle with wispy fair hair and pink cheeks. She’s not crawling yet. I can’t wait until they get to that point. All hell is let loose! The house has to be child safety proofed from top to bottom.

After we say our hellos, Toni puts Courtney on the floor and William crawls up and sits opposite her. She stares at him with her big brown eyes and suddenly smiles widely in recognition. Will smiles back, he's a little charmer already. He flashes his bright baby blues and babbles at her with his newly learned first words.

  “Bababa... dada...”

He leans forward and takes her pink toy giraffe from her hand roughly, scampering off with it behind the sofa. Her face puckers up in slow motion and she starts crying with the sudden loss of her toy. Alex goes to get it back for her, giving Will his toy chopper instead, which he seems equally happy with.

We all flop around. It’s our usual pizza get together. We have a few drinks, they stay overnight. Sometimes we watch a movie or listen to music and talk. Other times the men watch NFL or baseball while Toni and I have a glass of wine and play with the babies. Maybe I’ll sing a few songs tonight to provide some more entertainment. They’re always asking me to, but I don't feel right singing in the living room to a family audience. It seems way too suggestive. I have a singing job at a local night spot three evenings a week, and that's where I let rip with my sensual musical creativity. The management has offered me more sessions but I want to be home at the moment. I’m enjoying it all far more than I could ever have imagined.

I love being a mom, and a wife.

My life has been one big whirl since I met Alexander Ryan Jackson. Our story is still in full flow, just like our love. It keeps getting better and better.
