Her entire body tightened. Her moans got louder. I worked her body, wanting her to experience all these heightened senses. When her body began to tighten, I deepened my thrusts, massaged her clit a little more ruggedly, and slowly slid my finger back and forth.
“Roman. Rooommmaannn.” Her lips shouting my name during the throes of orgasm was one of the hottest fucking things ever.
I gave her a few seconds to recoup her breathing before releasing my hold on her and rolling her onto her back. Even in her sex-drunk haze she parted her thighs for me and I lined my cock up and pushed inside to find her walls heated and still slick with need.
I couldn’t believe that I had found her, found my One, the look of her small naked body beneath me, her head framed by her wild red hair scattered on my sheets sent me into overdrive. I needed this woman, I had to get closer to her. Resting my body against her, my face alongside hers, my hands twisted in the sheets on either side of her head, I held us locked together. Every muscle in me was straining as I fought not to lose myself before bringing Avery to satisfaction once more.
My room was filled with the slapping sounds of sex and our cries for release, as we struggled to find ways to show our love to each other.
Then, I felt it, Avery tightened around me and I slammed home one last time as my world exploded inside her. Avery shattered beneath my release, her back arched and her mouth wide. Her hands were tight on my biceps.
The glorious feeling of being inside my woman, of knowing there would be no other man who would ever know this feeling. “I love you, Avery,” I whispered into her ear and her hands cupped my face to pull my lips to hers.
She took me in a deep kiss and caressed my face and her fingertips lightly traced my jaw line. We broke our kiss and I rose to take in her features again. She seemed to be at peace. I made a vow to find her this way every night from this day forward, with me deep inside her.
“I love you, Roman.”

I cracked my eyes open to the blaring sun, reaching behind me, I felt for Roman but he wasn’t there.
“Roman, where are you?” I waited for him to come to me. Okay, it was the first sign that he was spoiling me but his bed was comfy. “Roman?” I stretched, shocked that I was a little sore between my legs but to be honest, once I had agreed to spend the night, Roman couldn’t keep his hands off me.
When Roman wasn’t answering me, I decided it was time to go searching for him but unfortunately I couldn’t find him…anywhere.
I glanced around, maybe he left me a note but there wasn’t one. Doubts in my head slowly started trickling in. I snagged my phone and dialed him but it went straight to voice mail. Those voices in my head were now starting to shout, he got what he wanted, you spent the night, you’re no longer a challenge.
No, that wasn’t right. Roman loves me, I know it. He does, doesn’t he? If he loved you then why did he leave you with no word?
I went in search of my bag of toiletries but it was no longer on the floor by the door, the last place I remember seeing it before lust overtook us. Moving around the condo for that brief moment I imagined moving into and living with Roman, I finally found my stuff. It was set out on the vanity in the bathroom. At least he’d done that, that was sweet, right? He put my stuff in the bathroom, that wasn’t indicative of someone who wanted me gone. But then where was he?
Quickly I dressed, I needed to get up to the stadium anyway, there was an early afternoon game and Roman was finally back on the field. I’d see him there regardless.
Making a last minute change in my wardrobe, I slipped my number one jersey on and then put a team button-down on over it.
When I arrived at the stadium, I immediately got to work. First at my desk filling out two weeks full of medical records on the daily treatment I did for Roman. Then I headed down to the medic room. This was where Violet and I checked the guys over who had been injured and gave them a final okay to play. We checked any new injuries or complaints and administered any treatments that were needed to help the players be the best they could be and the healthiest.
“You just missed Roman,” Violet said as soon as I walked into the room.
“Oh, okay. I’ll see him in a little bit.”
Violet looked up from her iPad and stared at me. “Everything okay?” I nodded. “Then why do you look as if someone just ran over your dog?”
“I’m not—” I stopped talking when Isaac Grahame, the middle linebacker came in, the guy was huge. “Hey, Isaac, you here for us to give the okay on that hand?” I asked.
“Yep, just need Doc to sign off so I can get it wrapped.”
Violet examined his hand, added pressure, moved the fingers, and then typed in her iPad. “I cleared you, go get taped.”
“Thanks, Doc, Avery.” Isaac left but unfortunately after him it was nonstop work. A few x-rays, a couple electromagnetic therapy sessions, and administering fluids intravenously to some dehydrated players.
The bell chimed alerting all support staff that it was close to game time. Violet and I finished up and headed out to the field.
The impact to my heart at seeing him was jolting. I kept coaching myself to not over react but how could I not? I’d been here for hours and he never once came by to see me and he always came by. It seemed to be incident after incident piling up or should I say piling against Roman.
I stood back as the players were lined up in the tunnel, my heart raced when I laid eyes on number twenty-two all the way up front. Secretly I prayed for him to turn around, see me, lock eyes with me, let me know that I’m your one, but when they rushed onto the field without even a glance my heart and confidence seemed to slip a little further.
It was the first official preseason game, today it was Jets against the Suns. How ironic, when all I wanted to do was get out of the sun and take a jet, somewhere, anywhere, just far, far away.
I stood on the sideline and watched the first snap, my breath caught in my throat as I prayed that Roman wouldn’t be hurt. Each quarter was fifteen minutes but it was the longest most excruciating fifteen minutes in history. At halftime, the Suns were ahead by three. We all bound for the tunnel, Violet, I, and our team were craziest during halftime. We had twelve minutes to check players for sprains, unreported injuries, dehydration, and heat stroke. Not for a single second did I see Roman, this shocked me since he was fresh off the injury list.
The warning bell rang, the coach yelled, and all of the players raced out. It was the quickest twelve minutes in history. Violet and I repacked our medic bags and joined the team on the sideline.
Today was hot, I was sweltering with the jersey on and the button-down over it but I had no choice, I wasn’t uncovering the jersey.
Finally, the fourth quarter came to a close and the Suns won by thirteen points. Everyone on the sidelines flooded the field, reporters vied for position to try to get an interview. Security guards worked tirelessly to keep overzealous fans back. Me? I gathered my stuff and headed for the medic room. I was staring at the turf below me and not up, when large cleats came into my line of sight. Slowly I gazed up and met a pair of dark eyes and a smile wide as the sun emblem on his jersey.
He reached out to pull me into his arms and I stepped back. “One, what’s wrong, baby?” I felt the tears that I had refused to let fall slowly start to roll down my cheeks. I needed to get out of here or I was going to start ugly crying. “Avery, why aren’t you talking to me? Baby, what’s wrong?”
“You. You left me. I gave you everything. I fell in love with you and you got what you wanted and then left.” I wiped at the tears.
“Huh? Who told you I was leaving you? I’ll kill ‘em right now.”
“You did in your actions. I finally agreed to stay the night and I wake to you gone, no word. Then you avoid me like the plague. I was just a fucking conquest. Let me go, Roman.” I took a step to move around him but he wrapped an arm around my waist.
“Umm, I have no clue what you’re talking about
. Before I left this morning, I woke you and kissed you goodbye. Sure, you were still half asleep but I told you I had an errand to run before the game. Don’t you remember? You even kissed me.”
I bit my lower lip, I didn’t remember any of this but it wasn’t a shock, my mom used to say I slept like the dead. “I don’t remember any of this. Why didn’t you come see me once I got here today?”
“Because I was nervous as hell. I knew if I saw you that you would instantly figure it out.”
I was totally confused. “Figure what out?”
“I told you that you’re my One. You’re it for me and I’m not changing my mind on that. From the first moment I saw you, I knew that it was going to be me and you against the world.”
I was puzzled by his words. Sure they were sweet but where was he going with all of this?
“What I’m trying to say is”—Roman knelt to one knee, people leaving the stadium paused to watch, a hush swept across the arena, and the Jumbotron focused in on us—“I love you, Avery Michelle Watson, will you marry me? Be my One for always.”
Holy hell, I glanced around and the rest of the team was staring at us, Violet was watching, Mindy, Cami, Harper, they were all there, waiting, and watching. I looked down at this Goliath of a man who for some crazy reason decided to love me.
“Yes. Yes, yes, yes.” Roman stood, slid a gorgeous pear-cut, fancy-blue, diamond ring on to my finger. It was breathtaking. “I love it, it’s so unique.”
“It’s my promise to you. The only blue tear you’ll ever have is the one on your finger from this day forward if I can help it.” I threw myself against him, squeezing him tight. “Baby, I got just one more question, where’s your jersey? I wanted to see you in it.”
I pulled off the button-down and did a twirl so he could see me wearing his name and sporting the number one.
“You’re going to start a riot, women are going to fight to get a number one, you know that? Natalie has decided that the number one is going to be reserved strictly for spouses.”
“Well, I’ve got the Gallagher one, and I’m not letting it go.”
“Damn straight.”
Roman picked me up, lowered his mouth to mine, and carried me off the field.
Epilogue
Avery
“Hey, Vi, after the game we need to have a talk,” I said or rather yelled as the crowd was going wild. The Suns were having a fabulous year, no one expected an expansion team to make it this far in their second year but I did, I had always believed in them. If they won this game they were going to the Super Bowl and that’s where Roman belonged.
“Everything okay?”
“Fine.”
“You’re not leaving, are you? Are you becoming a kept woman? You got you a rich husband, now you’re gonna stay home and eat bonbons and watch Days of our Lives?”
I elbowed her in the side. “No, and I didn’t think Days of our Lives was still on. Besides what the hell is a bonbon, truly? Is it a truffle, is it just candy, what?”
“Hey, wait, I just noticed you aren’t wearing your number one jersey. Aren’t you hot with those long sleeves on?” Violet asked.
I glanced up at the clock, we had this game, we were up by ten, and there were twenty-eight seconds left on the clock. “Yeah, now that you mention it, I am kind of hot.”
I slowly unzipped my light jacket and pulled it off as the clock counted down. I didn’t say anything or move, just acted normal. Then slowly like a wave of sound the crowd started getting louder and louder.
“What’s going on?” Violet asked.
“No clue.” I feigned innocence.
“You’re up to something.” Violet stared at me and then leaned back and glanced at my jersey. “Holy shit. Holy shit. Does Roman know?” I shook my head. “But sixty-eight thousand other people know?” I nodded.
The clock ran out, the buzzer rang, and the crowd rushed onto the field to congratulate the team. “I guess we should go out there,” I said. I started walking while the crowd chanted, and just like always Roman searched for me before he did anything else.
I had gotten all of five yards in when he wrapped me in his arms. “We did it, we did it.” He set me down and kissed me. “Where’s your jersey? I’ve never seen that one.”
“Oh, I had this one made. Don’t you like it?”
“I guess.”
I slowly turned around and as I did people who had been leaving the stadium stopped to watch, the Jumbotron picked us up, and finally Roman could read. Across the top, it read Baby Gallagher, for a number it said September, Two-thousand-twenty.
