The Darcy Marriage Series Page 20

by Zoë Burton

When her brother had first put forth the idea of holding the house party, Caroline Meade had been reluctant to go. While she no longer coveted Darcy, his estate, or his wealth, she was embarrassed by the actions she had taken and the trouble she had caused. She had no desire for that time to be revisited, and she was certain it would. It took a great deal of persuasion from her husband, who had found he liked his new brother very much, and assurances from Charles that his friends had long forgotten the incident, before Caroline agreed to make the trip.

She remained anxious, however, until she observed with her own eyes that the Darcys were not going to bring the topic up. It took a few days, but Caroline was finally able to relax and enjoy her time at Netherfield.

The Darcys had not forgotten Caroline’s attempt to come between them, nor were they likely to. They had chosen, however, to give her the benefit of the doubt and remain at peace with her.

It was clear to both Darcy and Elizabeth that Caroline was different, calmer. While she retained a measure of harshness toward others, and was often still rude and overbearing to the servants, Mrs. Meade had softened in her overall manner. The Darcys admitted to each other that she was almost pleasant to speak to.

While the Meades and the Darcys did not become close, and the Meades were never invited to Pemberley, Caroline’s continued improvement over the years allowed them to frequently be in each other’s company with equanimity.
