“If you force a confrontation, the rules will become far more… stringent.”

Solyra was angry again, and I couldn’t blame her. I’d be pissed too, if someone told me my DNA was compromised and I should be eradicated for the good of the empire. Really, her demands were pretty reasonable. They amounted to you stay on your side of the fence, and we’ll stay on ours. Apparently, that wasn’t going to be good enough for the Suaterans.

Danish looked saddened, like he was the one that didn’t have a choice. They were truly alien, and their laws and traditions twisted by our standards. It was a shame, and really very stupid, but it looked like peace had failed because Solyra wouldn’t kill herself.

Fuck that, if she’d tried I’d have smacked some sense into her.

“So be it, when your line is gone your successor can revisit the issue and sue for peace, we will be amenable.” he said with finality.

The transmission was cut, and the four ships cloaked and entered subspace, then everything went to hell…

  Chapter Thirty-Two

It was over almost before it started, as the universe quickly turned to fire around our three ships.

Our new DE shields worked no matter what way we faced, or what direction we were going. The ships would ablate over ninety five percent of the beams effectiveness. There was no way they could have gotten through our shields before they were destroyed.

But… they didn’t even get a chance to do that.

The Suaterans dropped out of subspace and opened fire on our four decoys. Our response was already in the orders, there was no need for Vik to order anything.

Our forty ships opened up with a hundred-dimensional plasma attacks at once, from two A.U. away. That was four thousand in total, a hundred for each enemy ship. Their shields lasted less than three milliseconds, and the ships exploded into gaseous debris. It was major overkill, they were no match at ten to one odds, much less one on one.

  Solyra cleared her throat.

Vik growled, “Why are you still here?”

Myra replied instead of Solyra, “The personal emergency evacuation wormholes take a little less than two seconds to form. The battle only lasted one point two seconds, so I cancelled after the danger had passed.”

Telidur laughed, drawing Vik’s scowl. He shrugged helplessly, still grinning.

Solyra shook her head sadly, and regretfully said, “Do it, activate the plan. And send the Suaterans our rules.”

The rules were simple enough, they were allowed to have seventy-five ships in both their systems for defense, but not one more than that. They were not allowed an offensive fleet, and any military vessel that tried to leave their systems would be destroyed. It would be easy enough to enforce, they couldn’t use subspace in their system, and if they tried to cloak and leave we’d detect and destroy them long before they could safely transition to subspace.

They were allowed a merchant fleet and to interface with the other independent worlds to trade. They were not welcome in any empire systems, and would be destroyed no questions asked if they tried.

It was harsh, but we all hoped it was temporary. Given their whole belief in removing an entire family line for the sins of one member, I wondered if that hope was empty.

  Vik said, “Fire.”

Small wormholes opened up in front of two of the ships, and fifty orbs were launched from each. The other side of the wormholes were deep inside their two systems. This was the object part of the lesson. The orbs cloaked, only when they were a second away did they become visible as they channeled a huge plasma ball a hundred cubic feet in size. Far too short a time to be targeted. The Suateran’s infrastructure and ship yards in the build system was destroyed, as were the beginnings of the same being built in the home system.

It wasn’t a battle, it was chastisement. They’d been warned, and had attacked anyway, trying desperately to kill Vik and Solyra. They wouldn’t be given another chance, not if I had anything to say about it. At least we now understood why they wanted both Solyra and Vik at the meeting.

I didn’t feel good about it, war was horrifying at times, but it had to be done. We couldn’t let them attack us with a new fleet every few months, so we’d limited their ships. We’d let them rebuild, but if they tried to exceed the numbers we gave them, we’d take it out again.

Not quite quarantined to their planet, still able to trade with the other independents, but limited and contained.

I wondered how long it would last, eventually they’d develop something to get around our restrictions, and we’d have to stay ahead of them to counter it.

It sucked, but that was life sometimes.

  Vik said, “Take us home.”

That sounded good, home. Family, lovers, mates, and children. Life was both good and bad, and I was more than happy to get back to the good parts…
