“Glad to hear it,” Alex said with a steady look that made me feel like I was the only woman in the world. “I missed you.”

“I missed you too,” I said seriously. Then before the moment got too intense, I said, “Believe me, there were many times when I wished you were there. And not just so I could have seen you in Regency breeches.”

We paused on the soggy bridge, Alex in the middle and Grace and me on each side. We watched the water rush by as it swirled and bubbled, barely skimming along the bottom stones of the underside of the bridge. After a few minutes, I pressed away from the bridge. “Well, I have a report to write for Elise. I should head home.”

“Right,” Alex said. “That’s one research report I actually want to read.” He picked up my suitcase. “We’ll let you get at it.”

Grace’s mouth turned down. “Oh. I’d kind of hoped that we might go to the ruins. You know,” she looked at Alex quickly then concentrated on the river. “All of us. I mean, if you want to, Kate.”

“I don’t know,” Alex said. “It’ll be wet. And you put up such a fuss before,” he added, but I could tell he was pleased. “What was it you called them, something about stupid old ruins, I think?”

Grace merely rolled her eyes and looked at me. “Want to, Kate?”

I reached for Alex’s free hand. “I’d love to.”

  THE END

  The Story Behind The Story

Thanks for reading Death in a Stately Home. Kate and Alex will encounter another mystery soon. If you’d like to know when I have a new book out, you can sign up for my newsletter, which also gives you access to exclusive excerpts of upcoming books as well as member-only giveaways.

This book was so much fun to research, yet one of the hardest to write. I loved delving into all the Regency etiquette, manners, food, and clothes. My Pinterest page for Death in a Stately Home is evidence of how much I enjoyed it. It was research. Really. Take a look for Regency fashion and food as well as a dose of stately homes and other places that inspired me as I wrote.

The idea for writing a mystery set during an English house party was irresistible—I’m a sucker for any type of mystery set at a grand estate—and there just aren’t enough of those kinds of books in my opinion, so I was so excited to write one. If you have a favorite British manor house mystery, I’d love to hear about it.

The idea of a locked room mystery intrigued me, but I wanted an answer to the puzzle of how it was done that would be interesting and new. I’d originally planned to have Amanda be the guilty party, but sometimes characters just won’t behave no matter how much I outline the plot! She insisted she was innocent and forced me to look for other suspects.

Thanks for spending time with Kate and Alex. Thanks again for spending time in my fictional world. I hope this book gave you a fun escape and an interesting puzzle.

As always, I hope you’ll take a moment to post a short review where you purchased it. In this digital world, reviews play a big part in authors’ lives. Not only do book buyers make decisions partly based on the number and quality of reviews, but advertisers use the same criteria to select books. A substantial number of honest reviews helps readers decide if the book is their cup of tea and also allows me to book advertising to reach new readers. If you want to support an author, post an honest review. Thanks in advance!
