Finding Shadows Page 31

by Lindsay Nall

“Not a peep.” Marinique let out a sigh and leaned against the wall next to Nyght. “I can’t blame her, can you?” Marinique thought over everything Mari had called him, the words she had thrown in his face, the memories she said meant nothing to her. All her anger and frustration had needed an outlet; he had just been the closest thing for her to attack.

“No, I do not blame her for a single thing she said.” They stood in silence for a long time but their thoughts were the same. Would Mari ever come out of that room? Would she ever be able to come to terms with what had happened? Would she forever blame herself?

Between the two the door to her bedroom swung open with a creak making both men jump and stare into the room. She wasn’t in the doorway as they had thought and Nyght reached out carefully to open the door the rest of the way. The room was still in disarray from her outbreak three weeks ago. Nyght half expected Mari to be curled up in a corner in another catatonic state but she stood in front of one of the large broken windows. The wind flowing past her carrying her scent to the two men. Slowly Marinique followed Nyght into the room, he didn’t want to be the cause for another breakdown but if she was willing to see people there were a few things he had to say but Mari spoke first.

“Tell Karter we’ll be leaving for Whittiker in the morning.”
