He leads me into the kitchen and spreads the folder open on the countertop. After dropping my hand, he takes out the stapled set of papers, the only set there are since I never asked him for a set of my own, he pulls open a drawer and suddenly has a lighter in his free hand. Holding the papers over the sink, he lights the lighter and holds the flame against the papers until they catch fire. We stand at the sink, watching until they’re nothing more than ash.
“I just want you,” he tells me, pressing his lips to mine. “We have plenty of time for babies… even if you are the old one in this relationship.” I laugh against his mouth, unable to believe my life has changed so much in such a short time.
Why did I ever fight this? Fight him? Remy is exactly who I need. I can’t imagine ever being with anyone else.
Epilogue
Remy
Four years later
Melody is still wearing her wedding her dress as she stands at the bathroom sink, in the suite I rented for our wedding night, anxiously waiting for the results.
Yup, that’s right. We got married only a few hours ago and now she’s waiting to find out if we’re going to have a baby. Honestly, we started trying the night we got engaged, figuring we would just do a city hall wedding when the stick came back positive, but we haven’t had any luck. Six months of negative test after negative test has taken its toll on the woman I now call my wife.
We’ve been to more than one specialist to see what’s causing her not to get pregnant, but they all said the same thing. Both of us are in perfect working order and it will happen when it happens.
What a crock of shit that is. I have more money than I’ll be able to spend in my lifetime, but I can’t get answers to why I can’t give her what she wants.
“Sweetheart, come away from there.” If I let her, she’ll stare down at the stick for the entire three minutes, making herself crazy.
Mel’s eyes lift and I see the sheen of tears in them. My heart sinks. Did she already get a negative? It hasn’t been quite long enough yet. I need to have her in my arms when she gives me the news. I need to be strong for her, even if my heart breaks right along with hers.
Just as I reach her, she holds the stick up in her hand and a radiant smile lights up her face. “It’s positive, Remy. We’re having a baby.” The last word is barely audible thanks to the tears she’s not even trying to stop.
“What?” My voice breaks, but I’m unashamed. “You’re having my baby?”
She nods, frantically. “I am.” Her eyes close and she lifts her face to the ceiling like she’s thanking Him. “Finally.”
I can’t keep my hands off her for another second. Wrapping my arms around her waist, I carry her out of the bathroom while she continues to both giggle and cry, and when we’re in the living room of the suite I twirl her around, unable to contain my own happiness.
Her arms come down on my shoulders and she drops her mouth onto mine. This is the woman I get to kiss forever, the woman I will go to bed with every night and wake up with every morning. We’ll raise our children together and grow up together.
Melody’s still holding the test in her hand when I drop her onto the mattress. I’m not willing to wait to make love to my wife for even another second. “I love you, Mrs. Winston.”
“I love you too, Mr. Winston.”
About the Author
Stacey is the New York Times & USA Today Bestselling Author of Second Chances, Shadows of the Past (co-authored with H.M. Ward), the Nashville Secrets series, and the Nashville U series.
She’s also the single mom of three amazingly crazy boys and since she’s a transplanted Yankee, considers herself a big city girl living in a small town. Because she can’t live in the cities she loves – Nashville, New York, Chicago – she writes about people who do instead. When she isn’t writing, you can usually find her curled up with a sexy book, or more accurately, scrolling through Tumblr. She also isn’t afraid to admit her favorite addictions: Tumblr GIF’s, social media, Spotify, Dr. Pepper, and of course, dirty books. Hunky heroes with control issues and strong heroines who stand up to them are her weakness. She loves to talk books – not just her own – with anyone, so send her a message!
