Of Darkness & Light: Blood Descent Book 2 Page 41

by T. L. McDonald

  “Always.”

The moment the word leaves my mouth, my choice made, a second door appears. The one that will take me back—the one Sebastian created.

“Let’s go home.” He takes my hand, a soft bluish white light glowing between our palms as he leads me through the door.

I crack my eyes open, barely making out the familiar ceiling of my room above me when something thumps nearby. I shift my head, my gaze dropping to the floor where a can of soda spills over the carpet, a stunned Sebastian standing behind it. He blinks, time standing still in that one small moment. In the next, he’s scooping me up and crushing me to his chest.

“Don’t ever die on me again.” And then his mouth is crashing over mine in a desperate kiss I have no time to respond to because a second later I’m wrapped back up in his arms.

Hazy memories of the in-between walk the line between remembering and not remembering. “You brought me back. How did you do that?”

“I think it might be better if someone else explains that part.”

  “Who?”

Sebastian releases me just as someone knocks on the doorframe. A man I’ve never seen before but somehow recognize stands in the doorway. I scrutinize his features, trying to place where I’ve seen him before. He’s so familiar. Strong jaw, soulful green eyes, slightly curled brown hair cut short, five o’clock shadow with a hint of gray, lips shaped like mine.

  Lips shaped like mine.

  It can’t be.

  Can it?

  “Dad?”

A small smile plays at his mouth. “Hello, Indiana.”

  Acknowledgments

As always, I want to thank my amazing husband and three wonderful kids for encouraging and supporting me—even when that means I disappear into the writing cave and the house becomes a mess, the laundry piles up, we run out of clean dishes, and I forget what day it is. You guys are truly the best.

To my awesome mom, thank you for being one of my biggest cheerleaders by keeping me on track with my writing. The last couple of years have had a few ups and downs—especially 2020, and without your text messages asking when this book would be done, I’d probably still be writing it.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you to my beta readers Samantha, Kelly, Wendi, Patrick, Kristin, Jena, Genevieve, and Jessica for letting me run my ideas by you, for finding typos, pointing out my lack of commas, and for all your invaluable suggestions that helped make this book what it is. You are all absolutely amazing people.

Thank you to the amazingly talented Christian Bentulan at Covers By Christian for designing such a gorgeous cover. You captured Indi and the theme of this book perfectly. I love it so much!

Thank you to Michelle VanDaley for providing the name Evan Lewis, and Anna “Alex” Dise for providing the name Ludvikas, both of which were used in the Blood Descent series. These two characters have been fun to write, and I have even more in store for them.

The biggest Thank You of all goes to my lovely readers for being so patient while waiting for the release of this book. You will never know how much cartwheel inducing, smiling so much my face hurts, dancing like a crazy person, joy it brings me to know you enjoy the words I write and the worlds I create. You are everything.
