Hotshots (Wildfires Book 1) Page 13

Now, the people who wronged her most of all, the people who questioned her relationship with the flame were winning.

  It was not okay.

It was not the way things were supposed to go.

She was supposed to be the hero.

She was supposed to be the one people clapped for.

At least she still had one other option. The flame was still winning the fight in the forest. The savior would know what to do, he always did. She just needed to wait, he would answer everything.

She went to the television and turned it on. The fire was on the screen and she grinned. It was perfect, the flames shooting up above the treetops. She turned up the volume to hear what they were saying.

“The Routt County Fire Chief will be holding a briefing in just a few minutes. Currently the fire has no containment and mandatory evacuations orders for several neighborhoods and ranches surrounding the town of Steamboat Springs, Co. Over three thousand acres have burned already, and although they have laid a fire line around the city, there is still a threat to the small sleepy town in the mountains. The main road in and out of town is blocked off, and their only support is from fire jumpers and slurry bombers. Right now the town is holding firm, but the fire is moving around the town. With miles of rough terrain, it will be difficult to fight this fire. We look forward to hearing from the chief and listening to what their plans are. In addition we will receive a briefing on what the inspectors have found in regards to the start of the fire.”

They don’t know, they can’t know, they are not that smart. She had covered their tracks, she always took care of that, and her savior always took care of the gruesome part. It was their thing, when she had been at The Shack he had stayed away; he had to because she was the one who they would pay attention to, not him. When he was around everyone just ignored him.

Her name was not ‘Barbie’ like everyone called her. They didn’t even bother to know her real name, but when they were done with this, they would know who she was and they would know she was the master of the flame; her and her savior were the only ones who could tame it.

  Let the lessons begin.

  Epilogue

A flash fire is a sudden, intense fire caused by the ignition of a mixture of air and a dispersed flammable substance such as a solid, flammable, or combustible liquid, or a flammable gas.

Keely had read all of the books, seen all of the videos, but had never experienced anything like this. She had been with her team; they were looking for the person who belonged to the SUV they found by a cabin none of them knew was out here. The fire was getting close and they needed to move.

“Keely,” Liam said to her left and she turned.

He was pointing to the large grouping of rocks and she could see a jacket lying on the ground. Damn hikers, she thought. Even when she worked in Cali they always were finding dumbass hikers who thought it would be cool to go and get pictures of a wildfire and then sell them.

They moved to where the jacket was and she turned to look around, there was no one in the immediate vicinity, which meant they had gotten hot, taken off their jacket, and kept moving. The only problem with that was the only direction that wasn’t in flames was behind them and the hiker wasn’t there. That was the way to the cabin.

Gaige came to her other side and he said, “Come on, Remi and the others found a full propane tank. We need to leave, if it blows we are gonna be caught.”

“Shit,” Liam said and looked back. “The fumes and the liquid will be like a fucking bomb.”

‘Come on,” Gaige said and they began to move quickly to the clearing where the cabin was situated.

Before they could make it the rest of the team and Remi were running toward them yelling. Remi had the radio in his hand and he was yelling. Liam pulled her to a stop and then just grabbed her and threw her back toward the way they came.

Keely stumbled but she knew she had to hold it together. The guys were all moving and she wasn’t going to get into the way. She ran back to the rocks, they could maybe get some cover there as the tank blew.

She could hear the roar of the fire; it had somehow shifted and moved closer. Damn it, it had hopped while they had been looking for the idiot hiker.

“Here,” one of the guys yelled and they moved toward the voice. There was a grouping of huge rocks, taller than a house, and one of the guys had found a small opening in between two of them. They ran, they had their tanks and masks, if the fire flashed over them they would be fine as long as they weren’t close to the actual flames.

They reached the crevice and Remi put the radio back up to his mouth and began to report in. Everyone pulled their flame retardant blanket out and began to squeeze in. There was a small opening in the middle of all the rocks, and they all moved to take a spot. Not everyone was in when they heard it.

Keely looked at the faces of who was in the small opening and then she turned and screamed, “REMI!”

  Chosen Wars Book Five

“I am sorry,” the small gorgeous woman said to them trying to move toward them without stepping on the debris which was impossible. “We are obviously closed because of a situation we have.”

“Obviously,” one of the guys muttered behind them.

Tao and Virani were both frozen, neither could take their eyes off the woman in front of them. And neither noticed the other having a reaction to the female.

“Okay then,” she said softly and slightly sarcastically. “Forgive us, the owners are on their way with the police, I am going to have to ask you to leave.”

Virani was the first to snap out of it, then said, “Is there anything we can do to help?”

The woman frowned and both men sucked in the foul smell of piss as well as the sweetest scent either had ever smelt. “Mine,” Tao growled under his breath and Virani frowned and looked at his best friend. What the fuck was he doing, he could see him holding back shifting. It was his mate in front of them, right?

“Fucking hell,” he whispered and Tao finally looked at him. “Mate?”

  “Yes,” Tao said.

“Me too,” Virani said and his friend grinned.

“Nice,” Tao said and they both turned their gaze back to the woman who had gotten closer and was not looking at them curiously any longer, now she had a horrified look on her face.

“Seriously, what the fuck? Are you guy’s escapees too? I don’t think I can handle that again,” Slay said honestly and looked at the group of men. She didn’t feel threatened, not like she had with the crazy fuck yesterday. Instead she felt something strange, like a pull towards the men, but that was nuts. They were hot, no mistaking that. Both of them were huge, one with dirty blonde hair and grey eyes and stood next to the dude who was apparently the leader. He was dark-haired with bright green eyes, and had day old scruff on his face. Yeah, both fucking gorgeous and panty droppers.

“No, we are sorry,” Tao said and stepped forward and held out his hand. “My name is Tao Brex and this is Virani Mevan, we were asking if there was something we could do to help you here?”

“Ummm,” she said skeptically and then shook her head. The blonde’s name was Tao, not that she cared. “No, the owners are taking care of notifying the police and we will need to make a plan for clean up, so I guess we will be closed for a while. There is another café down the street that is open.”

“And you are?” Tao asked softly and the woman’s gaze widened.

“Uh, yeah pretty sure,” she snapped and then a ruckus in the back of the café drew her attention. Tao and Virani both stiffened and immediately went into protection mode. The woman who hadn’t revealed her name was swung behind them.

“The police have reports of a man accosting you yesterday, why didn’t you tell me,” an older woman screeched in the middle of the café.

“Maria,” the woman behind them yelled.

“Slay?” the older woman said with a frown and looked towards the door. She saw the large men who were standing there and her eyes narrowed as she searched for her waitress. Not seeing her, she began to stomp to the door. “Where is my girl?” she barked.

“Here,” Slay called and raised her hand and pushed between the large immovable men. “If the mountains would part you could see me.”

  Excerpt from Jody’s Men

  By Lynn Ray Lewis

John Milton watched as she walked past him again. The few times Jody Branch allowed her eyes to be caught by his had her blushing and hurrying on to other customers.

John sat at his table in the corner of the bar and pulled his gaze back to the man and woman in front of him. They were pitiful excuses for human beings, who were about to have their pitiful asses out on the street unless they paid him back for the money he’d loaned them—tonight. The loan had come due six months ago, and he’d already taken the title to the property back into his name three months ago. From the looks of the almost full to capacity bar, there should be no reason for them to be defaulting on the substantial loan to begin with. Harold had begged for leniency and understanding, so he had caved and allowed them to keep running the bar until business got better, and instead of renting, they would again be able to purchase the place.

The number one reason, hell if he was honest, the only reason he had allowed himself to act so dumb was laid squarely on the shoulders of the girl that was still running back and forth to the kitchen and bar. This was their last chance, his kindness ended tonight if they refused to accept his last offer. The girl was becoming an obsession with him, and he was doing his best not to hurt her. She had been protective of them the last time he came looking for Harold and DeeDee, this time they were out in the open when he came into the bar. Jody looked too stressed out to care who saw what at the moment, as she bussed tables and said goodnight to the people as they left the building.

“Now, I have a dilemma here, I can let you keep lying to me and let you think you are getting away with it, I can toss your asses out tonight or I can give you until morning to get out of my building. How you answer and what your answer is will make my decision easier.” He eyed the haggard looking woman with the sunken cheeks and rotting teeth first. Last year she had looked healthy and vibrant, ready to take on the challenge of starting a new business and eager to make it work. Now Dee Dee Branch had the appearance of a crack whore. Her entire body was moving and twitching around.

Harold Branch looked like he couldn’t be bothered to listen or talk. He was zoned out, nodding his head and tapping his thumbs on his thighs in tune to some invisible music heard only in his own mind.

John had seen enough to know they were no help to themselves, let alone competent to run a thriving business like this. At least now he was certain where the mortgage money was going, right up their noses and in the thin veined arms that DeeDee had stretched out on the table. The needle tracks were there and she was so high she didn’t try to hide them from his sight.

He looked around the room, several people still gathered in groups; some were shooting darts and a few rough looking types were playing pool and harassing the women sitting at a table close enough for the women to flirt with the players, yet not get in the way of the pool cue sticks. A jukebox sat near the back of the room with a small square of a wooden dance floor. The décor was eclectic to say the least and John hated to close the place.

He spied Jody running from the kitchen with a large tray of deep fried breaded something and watched as she kept the tray high on one hand while grabbing a pitcher and drawing it full of beer with almost no foamy head. The girl has talent. She wound her way through the tables and set the beer down on the table that six laughing twenty something’s occupied, started handing out plastic baskets, moving around the table, and having a wide smile for those that said thank you.

He sat with her parents and watched the girl move from table to bar and kitchen. He especially enjoyed watching her stride past and the way her wide hips swayed. He loved this woman’s anatomy, breasts nice and plump and a wide ass like hers were one of his many kinks. Her hair was shiny light brown and thick, even scraped back from her rounded shoulders. He knew it would be beautiful loose and spread out on a pillow, or wrapped in his fist, as he slammed his cock inside her pussy or her tight asshole. Speculating as to whether her ass was virgin had his cock stirring to life and he had to adjust his slacks to make room for his hardening appendage.

John sat waiting for last call, knowing Jody would need time to clear the place out before he talked to her. DeeDee was now pulling at he
r hair and picking her fingernails while tears trailed down the open sores on her cheeks. Harold seemed to have fallen asleep with his eyes open.

Jody locked the front door to the bar and wearily went to the kitchen to fix her parents' sandwiches. She was so hungry that it was a miracle she hadn’t scarfed down a burger way before now. The reason she hadn’t taken a break all night was sitting at the back table. Well, that, and the fact she was a one woman show around the bar nowadays.

  Wild Bounty Book One

  By Whiskey Starr

I think the last three nights have been the first time I slept better than I have in at least a month. Knowing Hawk and Wolf are after Andrew and they are at least pretending they care means more to me than everyone else in the town and it’s comforting. Today I went into work and now being off I want to stop by Gran’s house. I haven’t been there in a while and with how I have been feeling lately, I wanted something that reminded me I’m not completely alone. It is a short drive, but my little Echo can handle it. I brought some flowers for the old oak tree Gran is buried underneath too. She liked daisies, just like me, so I made sure to get them in all sorts of colors.
