“I know.”
More crying.
“Gotta go,” he finally said.
“John?”
“Yeah?”
“Be safe.”
“Will do.”
“John?”
“Right here, Tilly.”
“I love you.”
And that’s when he knew they’d make it. “I love you too, baby. Call you tonight.”
“’Kay. Bye.”
And they hung up.
When he’d gotten home three days later, she’d met him at the door holding something behind her back.
“That’s not a butcher knife, is it?” he’d asked.
Tilly had laughed and pulled her arm around holding out a small box in her hand to him. “No, open it.”
He took it from her, opening it to find a sterling silver rope chain with a small, antique skeleton key on it.
“It’s the key to my heart,” she’d said, looking up at him with those teal eyes that’d begun filling with tears. “You’ve always had it. I just thought I’d make it official.”
He’d worn it ever since.
The first part of that argument hadn’t been a great moment in their relationship, but it’d been a turning point and had helped in making them stronger. Yeah, she still freaked out when he had to go out on assignment, but now they talked about it instead of her running.
“You really don’t think the lighting is bad?” she now asked as she lay under him, looking up at him almost pouting.
He smiled down at her. “No. You know I think your pictures are the best.”
She reached up and tugged on his necklace.
“Yeah?” she asked with a shy smile.
“Yeah,” he said with a smile of his own. He pulled his hips back then slid inside her so smoothly, it made her gasp as he filled her.
She’d given him the key as a symbol that he alone held her heart, but the love they had for one another didn’t need a tangible token. She was his and he was hers, and that was all the reminder they’d ever need.
