Crowns and Cabals Page 32

by Dina Rae

Six more months went by. Sai and I saw each other in the board room, but there was a chill in the air that had never been there before. I wanted to share with her more stories about motherhood. Will was getting a decent vocabulary as well as feeding himself. I couldn’t have been more proud despite being lonelier than I had ever been. None of my Patriots called to apologize. I was a leper as was my son. After picking Will up from the company’s daycare, I received a call on my private cell phone number.

“Jaxie, it’s Max. Don’t be afraid. I wanted you to know that your son has friends around the world. We will protect him at all costs. He is the true king.”

I hung up, furious, and collapsed to the kitchen floor. The Twelve were keeping tabs on my son. What if what they were saying was true? Nothing about the boy was normal. His eyes shone with an unnatural intelligence. I watched him as he put together a castle with baby blocks. Slowly, I got up and reached in the top cabinet for my gun. I saved the world from Stephen. Maybe I needed to save the world from my son.

As I checked the cartridge, a cold presence entered the kitchen. William was occupied with his blocks. I pointed the gun and stepped closer to him.

He looked up at me with his big brown eyes and said, “Mommy, no. Please don’t kill me. I love you.”

The gun in my hand flew into the family room and fell on top of the fireplace. Shit! He did that! With his mind!

“Mommy, please. I love you. Don’t make me.”

“Make you what, Will? What will I make you do?” I asked as I crouched down on the floor and watched him make a turret for his castle.

  “Make you sorry.”

I looked at him again, not seeing a monster, but a beautiful boy. I could never kill him. I loved him. Sins of the father shall be visited upon the sons…That saying was false. It couldn’t be true. I ran my hand through his thick, black hair and smiled.

  “You want to play, Mommy?”

“Yes, I do, but wait. I want to show you something your father left me.”

I went into my master bedroom closet and lugged the old wooden box back into the living room. “Here. This belongs to you.”

William smiled as he touched the jewels set in the crown. Maybe it was my mind playing tricks on me, but for a moment the gemstones glowed a spectrum of colors. What a beautiful, happy baby!

For the rest of the evening, we built a whole kingdom with blocks. My life’s journey split into two roads. My son wanted to walk on the road not traveled, and I the other road that had been used before. I chose to walk with him instead of without.

I hoped you enjoyed the book. If you have the time, please rate and review it on Amazon and Goodreads. I would really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for reading!
