“Netzach,” he murmured, whispering the name of his Fallen. “He believes it’s a mark of his curse. Both of them.”
“And that is precisely why I said it was up to you if you want to tell him, Robert.”
Robert sniffed. “I don’t know if I should thank you or run you off the mountain.”
Dina knew he didn’t mean it. Still, she prepared a portal at her side in case she needed to make a hasty exit, then admitted, “I’ve seen her, you know.”
Robert’s wide blue eyes went huge. “Her? His female?”
“It has to be. I sensed the amar mark, same as Camiel’s female, and I could sense your Fallen. It has to be her.”
A rumble deep in Robert’s chest, too agitated to be a purr. “Netzach acts as if their chance meeting was just another punishment. A tease. A temptation. After he sent her away, he’s never looked for her again.”
“But you have,” Dina guessed.
“He’s my Fallen.”
“You’re only supposed to tally his points, Robert.”
“And you were supposed to do the same,” he snapped back at Dina. “But that didn’t stop you from coming to ask me about amar marks before, did it?”
He wasn’t wrong about that. And his help when it came to Camiel was the main reason why Dina was returning the favor right now. “She’s in Spring Valley. The mortal female.”
“So close? How? She was living in Louisiana the last I knew.” A soft twang added to his slow drawl when he said Louisiana. Unlike Dina’s clip of an accent, Robert sounded like he was straight out of the Southern United States. “I wonder what brought her back to the east coast.”
“You really did keep tabs on her.”
“I did. I thought… it doesn’t matter. Not now. But, Dina… you’re sure?” When she nodded, he let out a huff. “This is… I’ll have to think about this. Spring Valley, yeah? I need to look into this further before I bring it to my Fallen.”
Dina expected no less. When in doubt, auditors always researched, looking for something concrete. It was part of the auditor’s code: Add. Subtract. Learn.
She’d passed along as much knowledge as she had. Now, it was Robert’s turn.
“Good luck, my friend.”
Because, Dina thought as she leaped into another portal after his reluctant ‘thanks’, Robert was going to need it.
