Chasing Clark (Maple Hart) Page 7

by Fel Fern

I returned to our apartment, only to find Dusty blankly staring his dark computer screen.

  Something was wrong.

I could tell by the way Dusty sat so still and rigid in his computer chair. I placed the take-out bags on the dining room table and padded towards him.

He didn’t even notice me arriving, despite wearing his favourite favorite pair of noise-canceling headphones.

I noted his cup was still full of coffee. It looked untouched. Another oddity, because Dusty was a caffeine addict.

I gripped his shoulders and he practically jumped out of his seat.

  “Dusty, it’s just me.”

“Clark,” he said, looking relieved. Dusty took his headphones off.

I knelt by his side and took his hands in mine. They were cold. I rubbed at them.

Deep down, I was panicking. I wondered what the hell happened but I told myself to calm down. Dusty already seemed spooked. I needed to be calm and rational.

“Dusty, talk to me. Are you ok? What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Clark, I’m—” Dusty halted. “I lied about staying at home today today. I actually went out.”

I frowned. “Okay, but you must have a good reason for that.”

“I do.” Dusty rose from his chair and I stood back up, completely unsure what was happening.

I was pretty certain I hadn’t done anything wrong to upset him. Heck, before I left for the interview this morning, I kissed him goodbye.

  Hold on a second.

Dusty seemed a little shy and apprehensive. I thought Dusty was busy with a project for his client but maybe it was something else.

Dusty suddenly hugged me and I automatically hugged him back.

“Clark? Promise me you won’t freak out.”

I took deep breaths. “Okay. I promise.”

Dusty bit on his lower lip. “We’re having triplets.”

“What?” That was certainly the last thing I expected.

I paused, studying my Omega intently. Half of me wondered if this was all a joke but Dusty pressed his lips together so tightly I knew he was being serious.

I wanted a kid, sure, but three kids at once?

I could finally understand why Dusty seemed in shock. Panic set in.

What if I ended up being an awful dad, a horrible partner to Dusty?

I knew our age differences bothered Dusty when we started dating.

What if I was too immature to handle fatherhood?

“I have to sit down,” I said.

Dusty followed me to the living room as I sat on the sofa.

I took deep breaths. Okay, we could do this. I was overthinking things, that was all. We had each other.

Heck, Dusty and I were amazing together. When we invited Gideon and Garth over for lunch that one time, Garth remarked Dusty and I acted like a well-synchronized old couple. I felt pretty pleased by that remark.

“Yeah, I want to the doctor this morning. I know how important this job interview was to you, so I didn’t ask you along. I called Gideon instead,” he said. “Can you forgive me? Knowing you, you would’ve wanted to go with me.”

It was shocking my mom hadn’t found out about this. Thank God Gideon kept his mouth shut. At least I heard this news first hand from my mate.

“Its okay,” I said, tugging Dusty to my lap. I settled my hands on his ass, making sure he wouldn’t tumble off. “This is great, Dusty.”

“I-it is?” Dusty asked. “I mean, we’re going to have three little ones running around the apartment soon. Aren’t you, um. Worried?”

“Terrified.” I agreed. “But it’s a good thing I finally got a real job again. We can finally get a house to raise our triplets.”

“You got the job? I knew you could do it.” Dusty planted a kiss on my mouth and damn, but he always tasted so sweet and tempting. “So, you’re really fine with me being pregnant with triplets?”

“We could do this. We’d be awesome parents,” I told my mate. “And don’t worry. I’m sure your mom and mine would be happy to help us babysit sometimes.”

“I love how understanding you are,” he said, resting his head against my shoulder. “I’m so lucky.”

“Which reminds me, I’ve also got something for you.” I set my Omega back on his feet. “Wait here.”

  “More surprises? He asked.

  “It’s a good one, don’t worry.”

I quickly made my way to our bedroom. I yanked open the drawer containing my socks and pulled out the velvet box from one of my clean white socks. When I returned to the living room, I could hear Dusty talking to someone.

“Yes, mom, I’ve already told Clark. He seems happy with the news. Oh no, please don’t tell Clark’s mom yet. Wait, you guys are having lunch together? Oh no.”

I rolled my eyes, not surprised our moms knew already.

“Okay, Clark’s returned. I’ll call you back,” Dusty said quickly.

He ended the call. He looked stumped when I knelt in front of him. I opened the box, revealing the matching gold bands inside. Dusty gasped, his eyes wide as saucers.

“Dusty Brenden Hobbs, will you do me the honor of being my husband?” I asked.

My heart started on a quick rhythm. I knew Dusty and I were made for each other but I couldn’t help but be nervous.

Proposing was hard work. I kept wondering how to do it. My brothers gave me plenty of suggestions and some were crazy and outrageous like proposing to Dusty on a horse.

In the end, I wanted to do things nice and simple.

“Dusty?” I asked after he hadn’t said anything for a few moments. “I want to spend the rest of my life cherishing and loving you. You’re my heart. My soul mate. Be mine?”

  “Yes!” Dusty said.

I stood up, he threw himself at me and I hugged him close. Once Dusty was calm again, I slipped his ring over his finger. He did the same for me.

“Perfect,” I said, admiring the rings.

  One Year Later

  Dusty

  * * *

I remembered closing my eyes, thinking I could take a ten-minute power nap. When someone gently shook me, I abruptly woke up.

For a second, I panicked, because I couldn’t hear Rose, Rob, or Rich crying or cooing.

The triplets kept Clark and me on our feet 24/7 and it wasn’t easy putting them to sleep.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved our babies, but sometimes I yearned for an extra hour or two of sleep.

Scattered toys and clothes were strewn all over the living room. Cutie, Clark’s obnoxious cat, stared at me from her cat bed in the corner.

  No sign of our kids.

“Relax,” said the familiar and soothing voice of my Alpha. “My mom picked up Rose, Rob and Rich 15-minutes ago.”

I almost forgot that Marissa was going to pick our babies up. We had the entire Friday night to ourselves. A luxury.

I looked at my husband, who plopped right next to me on the couch. Despite being always busy at work, Clark always made time for me and the babies.

He seldom did overtime and he was happy to look after the triplets whenever I was knee-deep in a project for a client.

I took on fewer projects after the babies were born but I didn’t mind because I wanted to be there for our kids.

I snuggled close to my Alpha. Since the triplets were born, we hardly had any time to ourselves.

Often, we were too tired at the end of the day to have sex, so we simply slept when we had the time.

“Why didn’t you wake me?” I demanded. “That’s 15-minutes gone by. We could’ve done something more productive.”

I gave my Alpha a suggestive wink, which only made him laugh.

God. I never got tired of hearing Clark’s sexy laugh. Some days, I still couldn’t believe I was married, happily settled, and had three kids.

A year ago, I was still trying to get over a break-up. I was living alone and wondering if I would end up being a bachelor for the rest of my life.

Thank God my mom fixed me up on a blind date with Clark.

“I like watching my cute Omega sleep,” he said, kissing me on the cheek. “Besides, you could use a nap.”

I rested my head against his muscled shoulder. Clark closed his hands over mine. I relaxed.

It was incredibly rare we had the entire house to ourselves. Like Clark promised, after getting his first pay check from the firm, we immediately started scouting for a new place to live.

A couple of months ago, we found this treasure. The gorgeous two-floor Farmhouse style house was perfect for us and the babies.

It had a big wrap around porch where Clark installed a porch swing. The house also came with an enormous yard where I started growing our vegetables.

It was also located just two streets away from Clark’s family home.

My mom, Marissa, and members of Clark’s family were frequent visitors to our home. When Clark first took me to a Bright family barbecue, I was honestly overwhelmed.

Over time, I got to know Clark’s brothers and cousins. It felt nice, belonging to a clan. Everyone had our back. I also became close friends with Gideon, Everett, even Aaron, and Todd.

Our home was always filled with laughter. Everywhere in our house, there were pictures of Clark, our kids, and the gigantic family we were a part of.

It didn’t hurt that apart from my mom and Marissa, Clark’s brothers sometimes volunteered to help babysit our triplets.

“You look like you’re thinking deep thoughts,” Clark remarked.

He cupped my cheek and kissed me long and deep. I clutched at his arm. Just one kiss and my dick got hard for him.

No doubt if Clark threw me on the coffee table and yanked my pants and boxers down, he’d find me slick and ready for him.

I shamelessly rubbed myself all over him, pleased to feel his erection pressing against my dick. I was suddenly full of energy.

“Why don’t we take this further in the bedroom, husband?” I asked, fisting his shirt.

Clark’s smile never failed to make my heart race.

  “Let’s.” He agreed.

Clark pulled me to my feet and without warning, tossed me over his shoulder and took me to our bedroom. I was grinning the entire time.
