Personally, I don't see many people of color in fiction. I don't see many authors of color, or main characters of color. We could debate all we want about why that is, but the cold fact is that it's true.
Diversity is important to me not because it gives historically marginalized people a voice (that's great), but because it makes all of us better.
Diversity is not just about what you look like or where you're from. What matters to me the most is diversity of thought.
In fiction, when I read a story that I haven't seen before or come across a new perspective, it opens my heart and makes me a better, more empathetic and compassionate reader and writer.
So it's been my goal to just write stories about different people from different walks of life.
Aisha is an African-American woman who was dealt a tough life but made the best of it. Maybe that's why people relate to her.
An Update on My Father
Those of you who read the last author’s note in Nightmare Stalkers are probably wondering whether my biological father reached out to me.
Unfortunately, he didn’t respond to my message.
I know that he saw it. And I know that he has been active on Facebook since I sent my message.
That hurt me.
It shook me more deeply than I was prepared for, honestly. But it confirmed a lot of things that I had always suspected.
For the first time in my life, I’ve had to come to terms with the abandonment issues that I’ve ignored. And that’s tough. But it’s not insurmountable because I recognize that I need to get some help and that I can’t fight this battle alone.
Sometimes, my books are the only things that keep me going.
Anyway, don’t cry for me. I’m not crying or losing sleep over it.
It’s sad that my biological fatherwon’t be the man I’ve always hoped he would be, but now I can begin to heal and let go of the past that has haunted me for so many years. It’s a powerful and redeeming feeling for me. Emotionally, I can only go up from here!
