She thought of the first step upon the bridge, and how it had surely happened long before she reached Marien. She considered what she had done that night, and realized how long it had been since she had done anything but flee and fret.
At last, she thought of her family. She imagined their faces; her father, distant and serious, but loving; her mother, passionate and plump; her sister; her cousins; her uncle.
The Church of Kruss had taken them all. But finally, she had taken something from them–something of their power, and something of their arrogance.
Davia’s family did not visit her that night on the bridge. Instead, she went to them in dreams. Her shoulders and eyelids heavy, she lay back on the boards and was asleep in seconds. No nightmares plagued her. Instead a maiden in a green dress took her through the forest to visit her parents and sister in a little cottage by a stream. The air smelt of saltwater and roses, and they were happy together.
When she awoke, some sense of that remained with her. She smiled to know it always would.
