And with that she saunters away in her red dress and heels, with Cae watching her leave until a screech of old tyres grabs his attention. Wheeling on the balls of his feet, Cae’s blue eyes scan around for Kendra’s car, which he duly finds.

He races over to it and she matches his pace as she jumps out of her door and comes to face him.

“How did you-?” She starts, panicked. “Where’s-?”

“Everyone’s fine,” Cae soothes. “We found another way to activate the bomb, the robots are gone, and once again everyone’s fine.”

At the second confirmation of this fact Kendra seems more placated. She touches Cae’s forearm as if to make sure of his words, then looks at the station. Her expression changes swiftly to one of disappointment.

“There’s gonna be a hell of a lot of paperwork for this mess, isn’t there?” She asks irately.

Cae laughs in earnest, relieved that what he has discovered about his friend doesn’t actually mean anything has to change. She is still Kendra, after all.

“You can’t keep your mind optimistic for even a second, can you?” Cae questions, still chuckling.

Kendra starts to step towards the building with a wide-armed, masculine shrug.

“I guess I’m just not wired that way,” she sighs.

Cae watches her go, stunned by irony, then takes the list of connections to The Face out of his pocket. He has a new path to follow now, and Kendra will be with him every step of the way until they find the man who murdered his mother.

But a crossed off name near the top of that list suddenly brings back a horrible memory, sending Cae to relive the last words of a dying police chief that Cae had once trusted with his very life.

  “She’s not what she seems.”

The sharp blue eyes of Caecilius Rex fall with fear onto Kendra’s form in front of him. Damian Jobe knew what she was.

And that means The Face might too.
