After traveling to the North Pole (in another dimension) and saving the spirit of Christmas, I was surprised to be visited yet again by the mysterious Val.

“There is something very important that you still need to do!” she told me with a sly grin.

I looked back at her and frowned. Truthfully, I’m not even sure that I can trust her. First of all, she has a lot of power. I mean, she can snap her fingers and make everybody freeze in place. Her power seems to be at least on par with that of Tanya and Kayla. While I trust Tanya (mostly), Kayla can be a bit of looney. Heck, she can be a LOT looney!

“Come on, Val!” I said. “You have to stop being all mysterious! I want to know what these visits of yours are all about.”

Val smiled at me. “I’m still not sure the time is totally right. Though, you have proven yourself to be a worthy protector of all that is good!”

I felt my face blush a little. I took a couple of steps back. “Well, I’m not sure about ALL that’s good. But I do try my best.” I took a deep breath. “But it’s a school day, and I really would like to be able to concentrate on my science quiz. It’s hard to think about the anatomy of a frog when I’m worried about what I need to do to save the world.”

“Great point,” Val said. She snapped her fingers.

The next thing I knew we were standing outside, next to my house. From the temperature and position of the sun, I knew it was now the afternoon.

“There. School is over, and you got an A- on your science quiz,” Val told me.

“Wait, what? Why A-?” I asked, feeling more worried about my grade than the time skip.

Val grinned. “I don’t want to spoil you. If I spoil you, I’m afraid you’ll become soft. You can’t be soft for what’s coming. Well, I guess you can be soft at times. In fact, you really need to know when to be soft and when to be hard. And sometimes, you’ll need to be sort of in the middle. It’s like those three bears… too hot, too cold, and just right. Sometimes you need to be hot or cold or just right to get a job done!”

“That doesn’t make much sense,” I insisted.

Val put a hand on my shoulder. “It makes perfect sense from my perspective. You see, I see things. Well, most things I see from many, many, many angles. That’s my gift. Time and space are the same to me. That’s why, Lia, I know that you play a role in the universe.”

“Don’t we all play a little role in the universe?” I asked.

Val nodded. “See! You know things!” She paused thoughtfully for a moment. “It’s just that your role is a slightly larger role than most. With great power comes great responsibility. You know how that goes.”

“Yes, I do,” I said. “But I’m going to need more information.”

To be honest, I wasn’t that sure that my role in the universe was bigger than anybody else’s. Yes, I was a superhero with awesome powers. My burps could even knock over a mountain. Okay, that might not be the best example of power. Yes, I had a lot of power. But if I’ve learned anything from my time as a superhero, I’ve learned that everybody has a role to play.

Val looked me in the eyes. “I see you’re thinking about your role in the universe compared to everybody else’s role. You’re correct once again. For one so young, you are fairly wise. But when it comes to burping down a mountain… it’s not the best example of your power.”

“That was only ONE time!” I said defensively.

Val laughed. “Yes, good point. See! You learn from your mistakes. You only knocked out the mall with foot odor on one occasion. You accidentally farted and dropped a herd of rhinos just once. You only…”

“Okay, I get the message. I’ve learned to harness my embarrassing powers!” I told her.

“Yes, you have. But you shouldn’t be embarrassed by natural functions. You are just you!”

“Wow, what wisdom! Can I post that to Instagram?” I asked.

“Plus, you are way witty. I love that about you,” Val added. “You have the potential to be such an amazing force in the universe. A force for good. A force for bad. A force for neutral.”

“But I want to be a force for good!” I insisted.

“We all want that for you,” Val replied. “But sometimes the universe has other wants and desires, and for all your power, you can’t go against destiny. At least not yet. That’s why I am here. I am here to help.”

“Val, you say that, but so far, all you’ve done is confuse me.”

“Maybe confusion is my way of helping. Besides, I did give you that A- on your science quiz. You also had an awesome LAX practice. Even Wendi said you did okay, which is very high praise from her. I love how you play LAX like a normal girl. That’s pretty cool.”

Suddenly, I remembered going to LAX practice, one that I hadn’t actually been to. It freaked me out a little.

“I just added it to the timeline!” Val told me.

My, oh my, this Val girl might have been more powerful than any being I had ever met.

“Little sister, what’s taking you so long?” I heard from above.

Looking up, I saw a tall, stunning, golden-skinned woman floating down toward us. She landed with her arms crossed. “Val, you need to get to the point. Even we can’t keep the universe stopped forever.”

The woman landed next to Val. Putting a finger under Val’s chin, she lifted her off the ground. Val pointed to the tall woman, “This is my sister, Vana.”

  “Ah, hi,” I said.

Vana released her finger, and Val sank back down to the ground. Vana looked at me with her arms crossed. “You don’t look like much.”

  “Excuse me?” I said.

Vana looked at Val. “So this is the one you think has so much potential?”

  “Yes,” Val said.

Vana walked up to me. She pointed to her jaw. “Hit me!” she ordered.

“Look, lady, I don’t want to hit you!” I told her.

“I don’t care what you want.” She paused and forced a smile. “Look, I know you think you’re going to hurt me. But trust me, I’ll be okay. I just need to gauge your power.”

I glanced at Val. She made a fist with her hand and mimed an uppercut. She mouthed to me, ‘Let her have it.’

“Okay,” I told Vana. Making a fist, I hit her with low power, but still a forceful uppercut to her jaw.

“Not bad at all,” Vana said. “I could really feel that. For a human, you have potential.” Vana turned away from me. “Okay, Val. Let her know what she needs to do!”

  Vana disappeared.

Val walked over to me. “Good
, I am so glad you impressed Vana.”

“Wait? I impressed her? She seemed bored with me!” I said.

“She realizes you have the potential to maybe reach your true power. If that happens then maybe someday, you will maybe become a Guardian of the Universe.”

“Could you put a few more maybes into that statement?” I asked.

Val smiled. “Vana is one of the most powerful Guardians in the universe. For her to be impressed with you is a very good sign. It means we are on the right track!”

“Val, please tell me what this is all about!” I begged.

My communicator, MAC finally spoke up. “That’s weird, I’ve been offline,” MAC said. “I have no idea why.”

“Probably a glitch, MAC!” I told him. “What’s going on?”

“I’ve picked up strange readings from the ionosphere,” MAC said. “I believe some sort of teleportation portal has opened.”

“Oh good, it’s begun!” Val said, clapping.

“Due to the weird nature of the disturbance, I’ve sent Jason to your location. Lori and Marie are also nearby, so they’ll be there shortly as well,” MAC said.

“MAC, you’re probably overreacting!” I said. The sky above me went dark. Gazing up, I saw what had to be about a thousand blue octopus type creatures floating down from the sky. They were making strange clicking sounds. “Okay, then again, maybe not…” I shuddered. “That is so creepy!” I said.

There was a poof of smoke and Zeke, and Luna appeared. “Don't worry, Lia; we’re here!” Zeke said. “Adam is also on the way! He just can’t travel as fast as my Luna and me.”

I saw a streak of light heading towards me. Tanya appeared by my side. “Can’t let you guys have all the fun!” she said.

“Unfair!” all the blue octopi said at once. “The octopi deserve to be in the contest!” they chanted.

One of the octopi floated directly above us. It didn’t look happy!

“What’s going on?” I asked Val.

“Ah, they’re about to attack!” Val replied. “Can I explain later?”

Tanya lifted her arms over her head. She caused a wave of time energy to flow out of her hands and up into the air. The blue octopi’s attack slowed to a crawl.

“I can’t hold this for long! These things have a lot of power. So, start explaining and talk fast!” Tanya said.

“Well,” Val replied. “Every century or so, the Universal Guardians have a contest on our home planet. It’s a team contest where some teams from different planets and dimensions meet. They each compete to see who has what it takes to become a potential Universal Guardian. It’s an honor to be invited. I’ve convinced Vana that you and your team should be invited. It’s a fun and challenging four-day event!” She paused and gave us a reassuring smile. “But don’t worry. The home planet is in a different dimension, so very little time will pass on Earth.”

“Why are these octopi mad at us?” I asked.

“Oh that’s easy, they feel they should have been invited to the contest instead of your team. They’re lousy sports! Give them a good beating,” Val said.

“They do have us outnumbered, a lot to not a lot!” I told her.

Val grinned and nodded. She pointed to the sky. Adam was flying towards us in one direction. Jason, in his newest armored suit, was flying towards us from another direction. Val pointed down the road. Lori and Marie had also just arrived. Val’s smile widened. “With your full team on hand, I’m sure you will show these octopi why you’ve been invited to the contest this year!”

Tanya started to sweat a little. “I’m glad the others are here because I don’t know how much longer I can hold them like this!”

“That’s okay!” Zeke told her. “With Luna added to our team, we’ve so got this.” Zeke blew her a kiss. Luna caught the kiss and smiled.

“I think I might barf,” Tanya said.

Admittedly, I’m not sure what was stranger, being attacked by scores of flying blue octopi from another planet, or the beautiful Luna being with Zeke. Both scenarios had me baffled. But the blue meanies wanted to fight, and there was no time to figure it all out. I had to deal with the octopi. Though first of all, I wanted to give them a chance to stand down.

“Lia, I’ve informed the authorities that BMS is handling these blue beasts,” MAC said. “And they seem more than happy to let you and your team take over here. Hana says that if you need back up, let her know. She’ll send a response team.”

“Hopefully, we have this,” I told Mac. “Actually, I’m hoping we won’t have to fight.”

First, I spun into my new costume. I didn’t have to spin. I could have just had MAC activate it. But the spinning was more impressive. I let myself float up off the ground.

The octopi started plunging towards me. Inhaling, I blew them backward with super breath.

“Look, I don’t want to fight you!” I told them with my firmest voice. “There is no need for violence. Let’s just talk this out! I had no idea about this competition until seconds ago.”

“All the more reason why you should NOT be invited!” the octopi shouted as one.

From below, I head Zeke say. “Well, I thought Lia made a good point, but so did those strange blue octopi! Life is full of wonder and complications!”

Luna hugged him. “Oh, Zeke, I love how you see the world!”

Zeke smiled at her. “I love that you love how I see the world!”

I focused my attention on the now reforming octopi. “You have one chance to avoid getting clobbered by my friends and me!” I told them.

They bombarded me with a black ink substance, totally soaking me. I spun the ink off me.

  “I take it that’s a no?” I demanded.

“That’s a giant NO WAY!” the blue octopi all shouted at once. They instantly started to descend on top of me.

Of course, they were about to find out I’m not an easy one to attack, especially when my friends, my teammates (and Zeke) are around. Spinning my arms super teen fast, I created super cyclones that blew the blue octopi away from me.

Meanwhile, the two boys in my life flew into simultaneous action from opposite sides of the sky. Jason aimed his armored arms and fired multiple mini-missiles. Each of the homing missiles hit an octopus and exploded. The octopi dropped from the sky and plummeted to the ground.

For his part, Adam turned his arms into beams of energy, flicking them out. The blue beasts that Adam hit with his beams crashed into other blue beasts. The octopi may have had us outnumbered a lot to a few, but their vast numbers made them much easier to hit.

Marie and Lori jumped into action. Lori literally leaped up, using her bionic legs to propel herself into a large group of octopi. Lori started throwing high-speed bionic punches and jabs, knocking each of the blue beasts down.

Luna walked over to Marie. “Let them have it, Marie girl!” she coaxed.

Marie shook her head. “To use my power on them, I need to touch somebody,” Marie told Luna.

Luna laughed. “Silly Marie. Those nano-chips in you don’t allow you to rearrange matter just by touching it. They activate the part of your brain that allows you to do what other people perceive as magic. That makes you a lot like me. You just need to breathe, think, and focus.”

  “Really?” Marie asked.

“I’m a high elf, one of Santa’s daughters. I don’t lie!” Luna said. “You just need to concentrate on what you want to do and then do it!”

A bunch of slimy blue octopi landed all around Marie, Zeke, and Luna. Zeke rolled his hands into fists. “I’ve got this, ladies!” he said, charging forward.

One of the octopi raised a tentacle and squirted Zeke in the face with gross gooey ink. Zeke licked the ink off his face and said, “Yummy!”

“Not the reaction we normally get!” the octopus exclaimed.

Zeke punched it, knocking it silly. Zeke stood there proudly, looking at his fist. “I’m so good at this!” He waved his fists at the other octopi and shouted. “Who wants more of me?

A bunch of octopi hopped towards him.

  Zeke suppressed a gulp.

“Stay away from my man!” Luna ordered. She snapped her fingers. The hopping octopi turned into stuffed toys.

  “Much cuter!” Zeke said.

Luna turned to Marie. “Now your turn!”

“I don’t know if I can do this!” Marie said as a large group of octopi landed beside her.

“We detect hesitation in this human!” the octopi announced.

Tanya appeared by Marie’s side. “Wow, you move fast,” Marie told her.

“I time blinked,” Tanya replied. She held her hand out. The octopi froze in time. “Okay, now do your thing!” Tanya told Marie.

“I’m not sure I can!” Marie replied.

“Sure you can. I’ve seen you turn things into flowers before!” Tanya grinned.

“You don’t need to touch them! That was a limit you put on yourself,” Luna told Marie. “Let your magic flow!”

Marie took a deep breath. Then another. She held her open hand out towards the frozen octopi. Poof. They turned into colorful, happy little flowers!

“It worked!” Marie said. “OMG, I’m magic. I don’t have an uncontrollable touch of doom!”

“Nope,” Luna said. “You just need to harness your magic; which I know you can do!” She put her hand on Marie’s shoulder. “I have faith in you!”

While I proudly watched my friends take out one octopus after another, I realized that the beasts just kept coming and coming. They didn’t seem to listen to reason. The longer this went on, the higher the risk that one of my friends would get hurt.

Jason and Adam both flew over to me.

“These things just don’t quit!” Adam said.

Jason nodded. He looked me in the eyes. “I think we, and by we, I mean you, need to show them what they are really dealing with here. Let your power rip!”

Adam pointed to Jason in agreement. “I’m with him.”

I inhaled and used my super breath to knock about ten more octopi out of the sky. “Guys, I’m strong. But not even Tanya’s time control or Luna’s magical zapping seem to faze these things!”
