Rule #5: You Can't Trust the Bad Boy (The Rules of Love) Page 16

by Anne-Marie Meyer

“Mom and Dad said they would come spend Christmas with me. I asked if they could bring you, and…” I raised my eyebrows as I met his gaze.

“I’m going to fly with your parents?” he asked.

I paused, trying to judge his reaction before I slowly nodded.

The silence that engulfed us was almost deafening. I knew my parents struggled with the fact that I was dating him, but I figured that these last few months had changed that.

He reached his hand up and cradled my cheek. “Promise you won’t replace me with someone in New York?”

I stared at him. I couldn’t believe he was asking me that. “What?”

He shrugged. “I’m worried you’ll get to New York with all those fancy people and forget me.”

I pressed my lips into his hand. “Not possible,” I said as I glanced up at him.

He held my gaze before he slowly nodded. “Then I will be there. For you.”

I giggled as I rose up onto my tiptoes and pressed my lips against his.

We kissed until there was a staccato knock on the door. I turned to see Mrs. Porter standing there with an iPad in the crook of her arm. She was slowly lowering her hand. “It’s time,” she said.

I pulled away from Jet, and before I could grab my suitcase, Jet beat me to it.

“Hey,” I said. “I could have done that.”

He winked at me. “I know.”

I shook my head but didn’t fight the smile that emerged. We walked out into the hallway. When we got to the kitchen, Mom was standing by the counter, studying her phone. She must have heard us because she glanced up as we approached.

The smile that emerged seemed genuine, and I couldn’t help but feel happy. So much had changed this summer that I was beginning to wonder if it had all been real.

Mom and Dad were trying to be more involved. I had Jet. I really couldn’t imagine my life going any better.

“How are you, Mr. Miller?” Mom asked, nodding in Jet’s direction. She held out her hand and they shook.

“Good. Thanks, Mrs. Livingstone,” Jet said.

To the untrained eye, their exchange seemed stiff. But not to me. I knew Mom was trying.

After they dropped hands, she turned to me. “Ready?” she asked.

I nodded. Mom had agreed to drop one of her meetings so she could accompany me to the airport—her words not mine.

“Yes,” I said, slipping my gaze over to Jet, who was studying me. The intensity in his gaze as he studied me caused butterflies to take flight.

Mom nodded to Jet and me and then made her way out toward the elevator. Mrs. Porter followed.

I glanced up at Jet to see his forehead furrowed and a twinge of sadness in his gaze.

“Will you miss me?” he asked, reaching up to tuck my hair behind my ear.

  I nodded. “Every day.”

He dipped down to brush his lips against mine. “I love you, Brielle.”

I couldn’t help the tear that escaped and rolled down my cheek. Jet reached up and gently brushed it away.

I was going to miss him. It was going to feel like a piece of me was missing these next few months. “I love you, too, Jet.”

He kissed me again. This time deeper and more passionate than I’d ever experienced. I lost myself in the feeling of my body pressed against his. In the joining of our two souls. We’d been wandering, not knowing where we were going.

But over that one day. That one, 24-hour period, we’d found each other.

And we were never going to let go.
