husband, John, was just getting into bed. She walked over to close the drapes. As she looked out the window, she noticed a strange black car parked across the street.

“John, there is a strange car parked across the street.” Kate said as she stared out the window.

“Oh, it’s just someone taking a late walk in the park,” he said with a yawn.

“Whoever it is, isn’t taking a walk. It looks like a man and he is smoking a cigarette. He looks like he is watching Benny and Mary’s house.” Kate said with a concerned tone in her voice.

“Kate, come to bed. Don’t let your imagination start running away with you.”

“I am not, I am just wondering why a man is sitting in a car, smoking, and watching our friend’s house this late at night. You don’t know what he could be up to, that’s all I am saying.” Kate pointed out.

“Would you like me to go out and ask him what the hell he is doing out there?” John growled as he got out of bed to look outside. As he joined Kate, the car started up and drove away. “You see, it’s gone now. Let’s go to bed. Five o’clock rolls around fast.” John said as he climbed back into bed. Kate closed the drapes and climbed in bed next to her husband. She fell asleep with a nagging sense of danger about the stranger in the car.

  CHAPTER TWO

He sat quietly inside his car watching the big white two-story house with the wrap-around front porch. The large white pillars resting on their red brick piers that held the attached round-spindled railing. The bright white color illuminated in the darkness. He lit another cigarette, as he saw the lights inside go out. He knew the people inside were retiring for the night. He glanced up at the upstairs window of the house next door. He noticed an outline of a woman staring down at him. Then he saw a man come up next to her. He saw that the man was watching him also. He did not want to draw attention to himself, so he started his car and drove off down the street. He drove to the main highway, where he stopped at an all-night truck stop and restaurant. He parked his car toward the back of the parking lot. He walked the long distance to the front entrance of the restaurant. Once inside, he sat down in an open booth. The only people inside were six truckers, three waitresses, a male cook, and a dishwasher.

A red-haired waitress approached his table. She looked to be in her early thirties. Her hair pinned up in a beehive style. With a white French-style crown on her head, she wore heavy make-up. She snapped

her gum that she was chewing as she held up her order book to write down his order.

“What will you be havin’, handsome?” She asked as she snapped her gum.

He looked up at her with a smile, “Well, for starters, how about a cup of black coffee, ham, and eggs, over easy, hash browns and white toast.”

“Is that all honey’?” She asked in a flirty voice.

“Yeah, I want my toast light brown, not burned. And how about you for dessert?” He flirted back.

“I get off at midnight. What you got in mind, lover?” She asked, acting like a naughty schoolgirl.

“Would you like to go out dancing?” He asked her.

“You bet I would, but where are you going to find a club that stays open past two a.m.?” She asked curiously.

“You ever heard of the Green Lantern?” He asked.

“Oh yeah, that’s that fancy club over in Streeter.”

  She replied.

“That’s the one, and it stays open until four a.m. We can stay later if we want. The owner is a friend of mine.” He informed her. “That sounds really great.

However, honey, I don’t know you from Adam. How do I know I will be safe with you?” She asked cautiously.

“Scout’s Honor, I will be a perfect gentleman at all times. I will make sure you get home when you are ready to go.” He said as he held up the scout’s gesture with his right hand.

“Let me get your order first and I will think about your offer.” She said.

“Fair enough, take your time. Just let me know before I leave. Deal?” He smiled.

“It’s a deal honey. I will think it over and let you know,” she promised.

“Hey Candy, who’s that guy?” A dark-haired waitress with large hips asked Candy as she passed the man’s order slip to the cook.

“Oh, just a guy,” she replied.

“It seemed pretty intense when you were taking his order, for being just a guy. Honey, he looked at you like a hungry dog waiting for a pork chop.” She chuckled.

“Well, if you must know, Miss Lilly, he asked me to go out to the Green Lantern to dance.” Candy told her.

  “Well?” Lilly said.

  “Well, what?” Candy asked.

“Are you going to go?” Lilly asked.

“No, I don’t know anything about him. Like where he is from, or his name. I ‘m not going anywhere with a complete stranger.” Candy told her.

“Well I guess you’re right, but he looks like a nice guy. He’s also kind of cute.” Lilly sighed.

“Yeah, he sure is.” Candy said with a sigh.

“Maybe he will come back if he really likes you and you can get to know each other, then go out.” Lilly said.

“Yeah, that sounds great. Nevertheless, I will probably never see him again after tonight. With my

luck, he has a wife with ten kids at home somewhere.”

“Honey, why don’t you just tell him you would like

to get to know him better before you go out with him and ask him if he has a wife and kids. Check his ring finger. If he has a line where a ring has been worn, then you know he is lying. If not, well then he is fair game.” Lilly said wisely.

“Thanks, Lilly, I think I might just do that.” Candy said as she put the man’s order on a serving tray to take to his table.

“Here you go, darling.” Candy said as she set the plate of food on the table in front of the man.

“Thanks, doll,” He said giving her a big grin and a wink.

“Look, I would like very much to go out with you, but I just can’t. I don’t know you, not even your name or anything about you.” Candy explained as she went on to say. “If you really want to go out with me, I think we should get to know each other first. Like, what’s your name? Do you have a wife and children? Where are you from? You know what I mean?” She said sounding child-like.

“Hey doll, you’re right! Don’t sweat it. Let me introduce myself. I am Mike Scallenie. I am from Chicago. No, I do not have a wife and kids. Ain’t never had a wife. I never met the right girl until now.

I manage a nightclub in Chicago, and yes, I really want to get to know you. Now, doll, it’s your turn.” He said as he took a bite of his toast.

“My name is Candy Blake. I work here, as you already know. I grew up in Bedville. I am single. I

have been since I was born,” she laughed. “Oh, and I am twenty-nine years old.” She added.

“Well, Miss Candy Blake, can I at least give you a lift home after you get off work?” He asked politely.

“No, not tonight. I already have a ride. I ride home every night with Lilly, the waitress standing over there.” She said as she looked in Lilly’s direction to point her out to him.

“Well I guess I’m just going to come here every night to eat so I can get to know you and maybe you will trust me enough to take you home some night.” Mike said with a big grin on his face.

“I would like that.” She said as she started to walk away to wait on another customer that just sat down in the booth in front of Mike’s.

When Mike finished, he paid his check and walked to his car. He sat in his car in the dark parking lot, watching the door to the restaurant. Fifteen minutes

after midnight, the two waitresses came out of the restaurant. They got into an old blue Ford coupe. As they drove out of the parking lot, Mike followed a distance behind them. He stayed far enough away so they would not notice that they were being followed. Lilly drove a few miles down the highway, turning off to a gravel road. She proceeded down the road five miles. There
was a little mom and pop-run motel, called Shady Oaks Motel. It had a total of twenty, three-room cabins. The office was connected to an old two-story farmhouse. The place was well cared for. Each cabin was well arranged out from each other for privacy. In the neatly mowed lots, surrounded by hundreds of big oak and maple trees, most of the cabins sat empty now because it was off-season. They always are full during the summer months. Six of the cabins were rented year-around by locals. Candy was one of them. She had lived there for the past six years. She occupied cabin number seven, it sat by itself at the far end of the grounds, surrounded by the big oaks and many shrubs for privacy. Each cabin had little stone driveways off the winding gravel road that weaved in and out around the cabins. Candy loved her little cabin because she was far enough from the other renters. They could not hear or see her when she would arrive home late at night, nor could she hear or see them. The only close cabins were six of the summertime rentals. Overnight travelers only rented those. The long-stay

family rentals were down by the big lake that sat to the far back of the property. Lilly pulled her old Ford into Candy’s driveway. The old Ford’s headlights shined on the cabin’s little porch.

“I will wait until you get inside,” Lilly said to Candy as she opened the car door.

“Thanks, Lilly. I will see you at 4pm for work.” Candy smiled as she got out of the car.

“Sweet dreams. I will see you at 4pm sharp. Have the coffee ready.” Lilly said.

“You got it! Goodnight and drive careful. Bye,” Candy said waving to her friend while shutting the car door.

She ran onto the porch. She unlocked her door, reached in with her right hand, flipping on the ceiling

light. She waved good-bye one more time as she turned and went inside as Lilly backed out of the driveway. She then turned the lock on her door and went into her bedroom. She stood in front of her mirror on the small oak dresser. While taking the pins from her up-do, she brushed out her long red hair, took off her uniform, went into the bathroom and turned on the water to fill the old iron-claw tub. She sprinkled in some bubble bath crystals and took off

her make up as she waited for the tub to fill. She was unaware that her every step was being watched through her windows that had no shades. She could not see the shadowed figure of the man standing in the bushes for cover, as he peeked through her windows, watching her every move. She soaked in the soothing bubble bath for thirty minutes. After she dried herself off, she pulled her damp hair into a ponytail, turned off the lights, climbed into bed, snuggled under the sheets and fell asleep.

The man in the bushes returned to his car a few minutes after Candy turned off the lights. He lit up a

cigarette, leaned his head back and closed his eyes as he blew smoke rings in the darkness. He could still see Candy’s small firm round breasts as she climbed into the bathtub. Her long red damp hair clinging to the center of her long, lean back as she got out of the tub, drying herself off as she went into her bedroom. He knew she was a true red head when he saw the thick patch of hair between her long, lean legs. He liked the dimples she had on her firm buttocks. Just thinking about the way she looked made him become aroused. He unzipped his pants and began to masturbate. After he finished, he knew that was not going to do it for him. He wanted and needed the real thing.

“Candy baby, I was going to wait until tomorrow, but

I got to have you now!” He said aloud to himself as he got out of his car and walked back to Candy’s cabin. Once there, he quietly tried to turn the doorknob. He found it locked. He reached into his suit jacket’s breast pocket and took out a leather-like wallet. He opened it to take out a set of lock picks. He knew this was going to be easy. The lock was a skeleton key lock. All he had to do was to push the skeleton key out and on to the floor, and turn the lock with his pick, and he was in. The key made no sound as it landed on a small, loop throw rug in front of the door. Very slowly, he opened the door as to not make

any noise. He slipped off his shoes, then his clothes as he quietly laid them on a chair. He walked naked as he made his way to Candy’s bedroom where she slept soundly. The room was dark. The only sound was Candy’s deep rhythmic breathing. He stared down at the outline of her body. He turned on the dim bedside light so he could see her better. She was lying on her back; some of her red hair strands covered her face. Her left arm was in an upward position on the pillow next to her head. Her right was down by her side. He gently pulled back the covers. She began to stir a little. He watched as her breasts rose and fell with every breath she took. This excited him. He straddled her, making sure his weight was not on her. He began gently rubbing her breasts with one hand. In his other hand, he held a ten-inch switchblade knife. Candy slowly woke up. As she drowsily opened her eyes, she saw the man’s face staring at her with a wide grin. She was gripped with sudden shock and fear. She tried to let out a scream. In a split second, he clamped his hand over her mouth and opened the switchblade that he now held to her throat.

“Shhh, shhhh, be nice. Do not scream and do everything I tell you and I will not slit your throat. Do you understand?” He said in a forceful, angry voice. Her eyes widened with fear as tears welled up.

“Shake your head yes, you will play nice and won’t scream. If you say yes, I will take my hand off your mouth. Now what’s it going to be?” Slowly, Candy shook her head yes. “That’s good. Now I am going to take my hand away, but if you scream, I will slice that pretty neck of yours before you make the first sound.”

He took his hand off her mouth. She gulped for air as she started to cry. “Why are you doing this to me?” She sobbed.

“Well, you see doll, I asked you out nicely, like a gentleman. We could have such a great time. However, you turned me down. You said no, and nobody tells me no. You see, doll... I always get what I want. If I don’t get it one way, then I just take it!” He yelled at her. “Now get out of the bed,” he said as he pulled her up by the arm, making her stand up next to the side of the bed. “Now kneel down,” he instructed as he pushed down on her shoulders. “Now, put my cock in your mouth and suck it.” He demanded.

She looked up at him with scared, pleading tear-filled eyes. “Please don’t make me do this, please!” She cried. He grabbed her by the hair and forced his large penis into her mouth. Violently, he thrust himself hard in a back and forth motion. He thrust her head in motion as he held her by the hair. “Yes, oh yeah, bitch. That’s it, faster, come on suck it, suck it bitch.

Mmmmmm... Oooooooh...” He groaned as he ejaculated in her mouth. She began to gag and

struggled for air. He pulled his penis out of her mouth as she bent to the floor, trying to spit out his fluid. He reached down and snatched her to her feet by her hair. He then threw her down on the bed. He raped and sodomized her repeatedly all through the night.

It was three forty-five p.m. and Lilly was a little early. She parked her car in the driveway of cabin number seven, Candy Blake’s cabin. Lilly had stopped to buy some cinnamon rolls. She thought that would be a tasty treat for them to have with a cup of coffee. She got out of her car with the little white

box of cinnamon rolls. As she stepped on to the porch, she noticed the door was ajar.

“Candy, you in here? Why is your door open?” She called out as she walked inside. “Candy, where are you?” She called again, using a louder tone in her voice. She walked over to the bedroom door. She stretched her head in the doorway. “Candy...oh God!” Lilly screamed out, dropping the box of rolls to the floor. She threw her hand up to her mouth to stifle her screams as she saw Candy’s naked body in a propped-up position, her hands out, stretched and tied to the metal spindle headboard with a pair of her

silk stockings. The bed was soaked in Candy’s blood. She could see that Candy’s throat was mutilated and her body was gutted like an animal. She gasped as she turned and stumbled out of the cabin.

Crying and screaming, she ran toward Pete Edwards, the owner of the cabins, who was raking leaves. He looked up as he heard
Lilly’s screams as she ran towards him. She stumbled and fell in the gravel. He hurried over to her to help her up.

“Good lord, child. What’s wrong?” He asked as he

  helped Lilly to her feet.

Lilly was sobbing out of control as she tried to find her voice pointing to cabin number seven. “Ca...Ca...Candy... She’s...she’s dead! Someone has murdered her!” Lilly cried.

“What?!” Pete said as he took her by the shoulders. “Are you sure?” He asked.

“Yes, yes, it’s horrible! Call the police!”

“Yes, yes, child. Come to the house with me. I will call right away. My Mrs. will stay with you while I call them.” He steered her towards his house. “Martha, come quick,” he called to his wife at the back door of his house.

The elderly woman came to the back door. “What on earth are you shouting about?” She said as she pushed open the screen door.

“It’s Candy. Something bad has happened to her. Take care of this young lady, while I call the police,” he said urgently.

“If she is hurt, don’t you think you should call an ambulance first?” Martha asked.

“An ambulance won’t do. This lady says she is dead.” Pete said as he went toward the phone.

“Oh my goodness! What happened to her?” Martha said with a shocked gasp.

“I don’t know. She was just hanging there all covered in blood on her bed!” Lilly cried. “I went in and just found her like that. Someone has killed her!” Lilly sobbed as tears streamed down her face.

The police sirens screamed down the highway as they headed for the murder scene. A sound that seldom rang in the small countryside of Bedville, Illinois. Sergeant Larry Parks from the Erie County Sheriff’s Department out of Bedville, was one of the first officials to get out of his patrol car in front of cabin seven at Shady Oaks. He met the owner, Pete,

who stood just outside of the cabin’s front porch.

“You called into the department reporting a murder?” The sergeant bluntly inquired as he approached him.

“Yes, she’s inside.” Pete answered as he wiped the sweat from his brow with his hanky. Although it may
