He wrapped his arms around her. “You said that. And I love you too. Sorry it took me so long to say it – guess I’m a man of too few words sometimes. And I was worried I might spook you.”

“Spook me?! Why would you think such a thing?”

“On account you come from such a fancy background – I figgered I might not be good enough.”

Effie sighed. “I … I did think that at first. But it was wrong of me.” She looked into his eyes. “But Forrest Lang, you’re one of the richest men I know – the men I knew back in New York can’t begin to compare to you.”

Forrest’s cheeks went red. “Ah, Effie, you’re wonderful to say such a thing.”

  “It’s true.”

He held her against him. “I love you.”

  She chuckled. “You said that.”

John put his arm around his own wife. “’Bout time he did.” He began pulling her toward the dessert tables. “C’mon, I want some cake.”

Once he was gone, Forrest pulled out the envelope with the check, then looked Effie in the eye. “I know your pa sent this for us …”

“… but you want to give it to Mrs. Main? Yes, I agree.”

“She’s gonna need it,” he added. “Tomorrow when the bank’s open, I’ll cash it and give it to someone to give to her. Maybe have ‘em tell her an angel said to pass it along.”

“There’s enough here to keep them fed for months. But are you sure you want to give it all?”

Forrest nodded. “We ain’t hungry, but they are.”

“And children grow,” Effie added. “She’ll need to get them new clothes over the next months, I’m sure.”

Forrest was still thinking out loud. “John and I can see if she needs her roof mended or things like that. Some other men’ll wanna pitch in and fix things up around her place. Maybe we can even make a day of it.”

Effie, tears in her eyes, hugged her husband. “I’m so blessed to have met a man like you.”

He smiled. “I’m just as blessed to have you. And tomorrow we can pass some of that blessing along.”

Effie Lang nodded and smiled, then pulled Forrest’s head down to hers to bless him some more.
