“I love you, my sweetheart,” he said, setting aside his teacup. “I love you as wide as the ocean.”
She giggled. “As unending as the horizon.”
“As untarnished as silver.” He smiled lazily, eyes closing in the sunshine as he waited for her to frame her reply.
“As long as I live.” Her heart filled with warmth as she said it, and his hand tightened in hers. He kissed her fingers, his lips warm.
Later, they sat together on the chaise, the sun coloring the windowpane the gold of firelight. Cornelia snuggled her head against his shoulder and his arm tightened about her.
Yes, she thought blissfully, life worked in strange and wonderful ways sometimes. Her life had changed so much. She had lost herself, and found it, been blind and come into sharp focus. Seen a maidservant transform into a prosperous housewife and a lady settle into a quiet life of bliss. She had seen what love could do. And learned that what she had always known, all along, was true. There was nothing more remarkable, more beautiful, or stronger than love.
