To my Protector- I put a lot on you when it comes to expectations, some of them are impossible but you never shy away from the challenge. I thank you for standing by my side to show me that you will always fight with me, behind me to show me that you got my back through it all and sometimes in front of me to protect me from the worst of it.
To my two inspirations- I would do anything to make sure that you are safe. I see how innocent you are and sometimes it worries me because I know how evil this world can be. I pray that you both will always have that innocence about you and that if the time ever comes you will know that mommy will always be there to protect you. I love you both more than life itself.
To my friends, family and readers- This story has been so long coming! It was probably one of my most requested so far. It is darker than my norm but I really feel like we needed to see Ink’s transformation. I had so much fun writing this book, sometimes I even worried myself. I thank each and every one of you for sticking with me and supporting me. Without you all I’d be nothing in this writing community. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Chapter 1
Four years ago…
“You dumb fuck.” The man standing in front of me hit me again. My hands were tied behind my back, and I was sitting in a chair. I tried to pull free, but I wasn’t strong enough to break my binds. “One way or another, you will tell us everything you fucking know!” He yelled at me.
“I won’t tell you shit!” Each word was coming out on a painful breath. The man spat in my face before he turned and stormed out of the door. We’d been going back and forth like this for hours.
I felt like a fucking idiot, we were in the middle of a war with Alejandro Vilanuevas, and I had to leave the clubhouse because I was jealous. Vida was everything I’d ever wanted in a woman, and though I was twenty-one, I could tell Vida was unique. The only problem was, so could everyone else. I was in love with Vida. It was my love for her that got me here. Kidnapped and beaten for information that one, I wouldn’t give and two, I didn’t even fucking know. I was a newbie, having just got my members patch with the Wings of Diablo club, so I wasn’t privy to everything that was going down. What I did know was, we were coming for Alejandro Vilanuevas and all his sex trafficking cronies. If I did survive, I knew it wouldn’t be long before they’d come for me. I was a brother after all, and we’d do anything for our brothers.
“Mother fuck!” I heard Vale screaming from another room. He was in this shit show with me. I didn’t know when they picked him up or how many more of us they had here, but I did feel better just knowing another member of my crew was here. I had some backup. The door to my small room burst open, and a bleeding and bruised Vale was dragged in. He kicked and tried to pull away from the two men holding him, but they just dropped him in the chair next to me, before chaining his hands to the floor. He tried to pull away, but it was no use.
“Ink! How long have you been here? What the fuck is going on?” Vale asked me, panic all over his face.
“I don’t know. I left the clubhouse, and before I’d even made it a mile down the road, they had me off my bike and in the back of a van. They shot me with something that knocked me the fuck out.”
“Yeah, me too. I was with Agra. Did you see her?”
“No, I haven’t been out of this room since I got here, you know of anyone else that’s here?” What if everyone was here, how could they get us out if they were all in here with us?
“I saw the little girl, Angel.” He shook his head and looked back at the door.
“What the fuck, what do they want with her?”
“Ink, this is desperation, they’re going to kill us.” Vale closed his eyes and took in a few deep breaths, but I could still feel the panic rolling off of him.
“Take it easy Vale, you know Wire, and the boys are already looking for us.”
“The fuck are you talking about? They’re not worried about us. They’re worried about the fucking cartel. We are on are our own.” He growled at me.
The sound of Agra screaming distracted me from what I was going to say. The door opened, and blood covered latin looking man walked in. I saw him with Alejandro Vilanuevas once before. He was a henchman.
He had Angel by her hair, and he pushed her into the room with us, “You sit in the corner, I’ll deal with you after.”
I didn’t know what they had planned or what had been going down since I’d been here but I knew that we were fucked. The boys would have a hard time finding us.
***
We stayed locked up for days, and it was hours since they’d last thrown water or food at us. Angel was whimpering and crying in the corner, and no matter what I said, I couldn’t get her to calm down.
“I miss Vida.” She cried in the corner.
“I know, baby, I know. I miss her too.” I tried to pull my hands up again, but nothing happened. The cuffs had long ago bitten into my wrist, the dried blood already caking and irritating the wounds.
The doors opened again, this time instead of Alejandro Vilanuevas or any of his cronies, an entire group of people entered the room. Two of them I recognized as the guards who’d been keeping us locked up, two of them looked remarkably like the Vilanuevas prick, and two others I didn’t recognize.
“Ah, Es Verdad, these must be the members those bastards were talking about. We have no use for affiliates of the Wings of Diablo club, kill them all.” The two men who seemed to be the leaders turned to walk out.
“Wait! Wait a minute.” Vale called out to them, “You’re related to Alejandro Vilanuevas, right?”
“We were, your president, that pendejo, killed my brother. Yes, it was deserved, but he was still our brother.”
Impossible, he couldn’t be dead. If he was dead, why hadn’t they come for us? A small kernel of doubt tried to push its way into my head, but I wouldn’t let it take hold. There was no way they’d leave us.
The one standing to the back came forward, “We told them we would reach out if we had any news of their missing members, but I think we may let this little meeting slip from our memory.” They turned again to leave the room.
“No, wait, I can give you information,” Vale yelled.
I turned to look at him, we were all scared, but there was no way I was going to snitch. “You fucking pussy, shut your fucking mouth!” I groaned as on
e of the men who was guarding us struck me with the back of his hand.
“What information can you give us? Nothing is going to bring our brother back.”
“No, I can’t bring him back, but I can tell you where the Wings operate from.” Vale tried to bargain, the sweat now pouring off his brow.
“What would we need that information for, we don’t want anything to do with this little gang of degenerates.”
“They may be little, but their reach is long. I can tell you what areas to avoid so you can stay out of their radar. I know who is buying what, and where we can reach all their loved ones if we need to.”
The brothers looked at each other for a second, before the older looking of the two turned back to us. “Fine, grab that one. The others I don’t need.”
Angel got up from where she’d been sitting and rushed over to me. “Ink.” She cried and gripped my bloodied and sweaty shirt.
“Juan, I know you want to be done with all this mess, but I have a favor to ask.”
“What?”
“This one, can I have him. This bastard club has also taken a member of my family, my wife's brother. I am sure she would love to deliver some vengeance herself. I’d be able to give you a nice discount on our next transport charge.”
“Of course.” The one he called Juan looked over his shoulder to both me and Angel. “They are yours.”
I watched as Vale was carted out of the small room. It was the last time I would see him as my brother. They picked up Angel and me, and I knew wherever they were taking us was away from my family, but even then, I knew they would come. Wire would come for us.
Chapter 2
“Get a fucking move on!” One of the guards yelled, pushing Angel down as she tried to walk up the unsteady plank leading to the cargo ship. Her hands were tied, and she was having a hard time keeping her balance.
“Hey man, she’s just a kid. Back off.” I bent down to pick Angel up, but a swift kick to my face had me reeling backward and almost off the narrow walkway into the water below. I could feel the blood from my lip, leaking down my chin.
“You don’t get it, do you, boy? You’re in no fucking place to tell me or anyone for that matter what to do. The only reason you’re alive is so we can get you to Ms. Ruby. She was real broken up when your club killed her brother; she’ll be happy to get some vengeance.”
I pushed myself up from the ground and grabbed Angel’s hand to keep her close to me. “I don’t know who the fuck Ms. Ruby is or what brother my club killed,” I mumbled through my busted lip.
“Oh, I’m sure she’ll tell you all about Monte; she was very fond of him. She is also very fond of prolonged satisfaction. I’ll tell you right now; your death will not be quick.” He laughed and pushed us both forward. Angel looked up in my face, the fear and uncertainty evident in her big blue eyes. I had nothing to say to console her. I felt the same way.
***
I’m not sure if we were on that boat for days or weeks; I lost track of time. We were only given scraps of food, and at one point, I was contemplating catching one of the rats that continuously scurried past us in the middle of the night, but I wouldn’t do that to Angel.
“Ink? Are we going to die?” The little girl's voice rang out in the dark, swaying night.
“No, baby,” I said. I had no idea know what was going to happen to us. All I knew for sure was I would die before they killed this little girl.
“What’s going to happen? Are they taking us back to Alejandro? I don’t want to go back to him.” Her voice cracking and thick with tears.
“Angel, I don’t think we’re going to Alejandro. I think our family took care of that bad man, but there’s someone else who is trying to hurt them.” I tried to find her in the dark so she could see my face, but I was unsuccessful. “Angel, I don’t know what’s going to happen, but you’re with me, and I’ll protect you as long as I live, you understand?”
“Yes, I know you will.” She said softly, a yawn punctuating the end of her sentence.
If there was one good thing about sleeping in a cargo hold, it was the ease of falling asleep. That rocking did wonders for the little girl.
“Ink, I miss Mikki.” She whispered as she drifted off to sleep.
“You’ll be home soon, I promise.” I closed my eyes and tried to fall asleep like her, the promise searing itself into my very soul.
A cold splash of water abruptly woke me from my sleep. The blinding light from the open door at the top of the stairs leading to the deck of the ship was hurting my eyes.
“What the fuck?” I screamed as I tried to wipe the offending water off my face.
“Our wonderful vessel here has blown a gasket, so repairs are needed.” The man who’d been with us from the start of this fucked up journey said as he bent down to get eye level with me. “Unfortunately, that means we are stuck here for a little while, and some of the men are bored.”
I looked between him and the men that were smiling and waiting behind him. “What in the shit does that have to do with me?” I asked, almost scared to know the answer. Usually, when men were bored, they started thinking with their dicks. If they were going to try to ass rape me, they’d have to kill me first. I hoped and prayed they wouldn’t come for Angel. Either way, I’d be dead before that happened to either one of us.
“Come on up with us, let’s have a little fun.”
“Yeah, Lou. Bring him up!” The man in the back called out as he turned and walked up the stairs laughing.
“Fuck you. I’m not going anywhere.” I tried to push him away, but my hands and arms were tied to the ship.
“I think you will.” The one they called Lou reached over and tried to unhook my hands from the wall, and I kicked him with all I had, and he fell back. I would have jumped on him to finish the job, but I was still tied up. “Boys, this one is a little feisty!” He called up, and three other men came down. They swung at me, pummeling my face and abdomen with hammer-like blows. I was sure something had been broken. I was a skinny man, I tried, but I was never able to put on any weight. Fighting one man was enough to break bones, getting jumped by four meant I was going to die a lot sooner than I’d thought.
“Ink!” Angel screamed from the side. “Please stop! No! Please!” I covered my face as much as I could and just waited for it to be over.
“Alright, boys! Enough!” Lou yelled as he backed up from me. The rest followed suit.
“Now, let’s get back to what we were doing.” Lou bent down and grabbed my head, so I was looking into his face. “You’re going to come with us, or the next time we won’t beat you. The next time it will be her.” He pointed at Angel, who was pulling at her restraints, trying to get to me.
“It’s okay, Angel,” I whispered in her direction, trying to get her to calm down. I nodded my head once, and Lou made quick work of unlocking my chains. He left my hands tied up, and he picked me up so that I was standing.
“Go upstairs.” He growled from behind me.
I took a few steps toward the stairs before I looked back at Angel and gave her a small smile. She smiled back, her blue eyes twinkling with unshed tears.
I walked up the stairs and was surprised to see that we were in the middle of the ocean, no landmass anywhere as far as the eye could see. Lou had walked toward the end of the ship. The three men who helped him bring me up grabbed another rope and tied my hands tighter, making sure I had nowhere to go, but they did not tie my legs. They hooked a large clamp onto the rope in between my arms and pushed me toward Lou. The clamp seemed to be attached to a leash of some sort, although I couldn’t figure out where the end was.
“You know I was watching the discovery channel and discovered some fascinating facts about marine life.” He turned to look at me, grabbing hold of the rope my arms were tied with and checking to make sure that it was secure. “You know anything about marine life?”
What the fuck?
“No,” I answered suspiciously, did he seriously drag me up here just to talk
? I was confused and petrified at the same fucking time.
“That is a shame. It’s really very interesting. Did you know that the orca is actually more dangerous than a shark? Or that we haven’t even seen the bulk of all the animals that live in the ocean? It’s all fascinating.” Lou looked down at the water below us. We were on a lower deck, only about twenty or so meters above the water.
I looked around again, the three other men all standing around, not making a move toward me at all. “What the fuck does this shit have to do with me?” I was getting pissed off. I didn’t like the fucking mind games.
As fast as lighting, Lou reached out and grabbed me by my shirt, holding me on the edge, the balls of my feet the only thing still touching the boat.
“What the fuck?” I shouted and tried to grab on to him. “Pull me back in! Stop!” I screamed and prayed for him to show mercy; he was going to throw me overboard.
“They also said sharks don’t harm humans unless provoked,” He pulled me toward him so he could look into my face. I grabbed onto his arm the best I could with my tied wrists. “Let’s test that theory, shall we?” He pushed me back hard.
My life flashed before my eyes as the sound of my screaming, and their laughter echoed in my head. It seemed like the fall took forever, but I was still on the same breath when my body hit the frigid water.
My entire body was submerged for a few seconds before my legs started to kick and push me to the surface. I gasped for air and spat out the water that had made its way into my mouth.
I couldn’t swim because I was still tied up, but my legs could keep me afloat. “What the fuck? What the fuck!” I kicked toward the ship, my heart beating hard in my chest, the sound of it drowning out the splashing of water against the hull of the ship. I looked up, but could no longer see Lou and his boys because of the lip of the ship. I could still hear them, though.
“Aw man, where did he go? Did he die already?” One of them said.
“No way, it wasn’t even that far of a drop.”
