“I know this is kind of sudden for you,” Mariah said to EJ, “but I’m hoping that I can spend my life with you and your dad, if you’ll let me. Because I love him...” She glanced at Everett, who had tears in his eyes. “And—and you.” Her voice trembled, but she continued on because she had more to say. “I—I know you already had a mother and I wouldn’t dream of replacing her, but I’m hoping that in time you’ll let me in because I’d love to be your mom. If you want me.”
EJ surprised her by rushing toward her and wrapping his small arms around her neck. “Omigod!” Her heart welled with love and tears streamed down her cheeks. That tiny action had touched her heart more than he would ever know, and she hugged him back with all her might.
Everett came toward them and wrapped his arms around the two of them. “I love you both, and we’re a family now.”
Mariah glanced up at him. “That’s right. Forever and always.”
