by Kate Hewitt

“He can’t win,” Lindy exclaimed, a bit too loudly, and a wave of titters rose and fell around them.

Then, with her chin lifted proudly, the young woman raised her paddle high, to a few raggedy cheers from spectators who had clearly taken sides.

The auctioneer continued, unfazed. “Three million three. Who has three million three?”

A scowl had darkened the man’s features as he tossed the paddle aside, shaking his head.

“She won,” Harriet exclaimed incredulously. “She actually won. Who is she, do you think? And what on earth is she going to do with this huge place?”

“I suppose we’ll find out eventually,” Ava remarked. “One day.”

“Sold,” the auctioneer called out triumphantly, “to bidder number twenty-four, the lady in the polka-dot dress!”

As one, all eight residents turned to glance at the young woman who now owned Willoughby Manor. She was smiling widely, yet she also looked slightly sick.

“I think,” Ava said with a note of profound satisfaction, “this is going to get very interesting.”

  About the Author

After spending three years as a diehard New Yorker, Kate Hewitt now lives in the Lake District in England with her husband, their five children, and a Golden Retriever. She enjoys such novel things as long country walks and chatting with people in the street, and her children love the freedom of village life—although she often has to ring four or five people to figure out where they’ve gone off to.

She writes women’s fiction as well as contemporary romance under the name Kate Hewitt, and whatever the genre she enjoys delivering a compelling and intensely emotional story.
